The Whirlygig

"The Whirlygig"  is an unusual structure found in a quite location near the marches on the North Norfolk near Stiffkey. It is appears to consist of a central arm post with the remains of attached electrical wires [right photograph]. The post is at the centre of a circle, approximately 30m in diameter. At the circumference of the circle is a path which is approximately 3m wide  [left photograph].

What is it?:- after a great deal of fruitless but interesting research at local libraries and second hand bookshops we have absolutely no idea! As a result of further research in local pubs done by chatting over a pint or two with some of the older locals in the area we suggest that it was a fairly secret " launch pad" for small radio controlled aircraft that were flown along the marches towards Weybourne as target practice to train the crews of the antiaircraft guns stationed at Stiffkey during the WW2.
