Statement

Many of the images shown on this website are from the 'Split Circle' series. This series of works stems from the decision to use the same shape as the starting point for each piece, whether painting or sculpture. The shape was chosen for its lack of associations, and I have used it to explore different visual ideas and formats for display; individual works result from simple decisions taken in relation to placement, size, spacing, etc.

The work makes no intentional reference to the outside world - its abstract nature and apparent simplicity facilitates the viewing of relations between shapes, volumes, space and light and hopefully allows the pieces to become objects in their own right, rather than representations ultimately tied to a person's memory or perception.

The paintings in this series are concerned with the flatness of the pictorial surface. By blocking in the outlines of overlapping forms with flat areas of bold colour, a non-illusionistic sense of depth is created. This contradiction is at the heart of my paintings, and is also a central feature of much of the art that I admire and am influenced by (Mondrian, Riley, Albers, Hofmann).

Cross, grid and ladder motifs have been utilised in my more recent work to continue to explore similar areas of visual experience.
