A new book dedicated to old Waltham Abbey was published
earlier this month, and it deals with perhaps one of the most popular aspects of
local life there is - pubs!
Waltham
Abbey, Reflections of the Past: Pubs and Inns, by Ray Sears and Jonathan
Foster, is the latest in a string of titles under the ‘Reflections of the Past’
banner which the indefatigable duo of Ray Sears and Jonathan Foster
have produced. It was officially launched at King Harold School on 3rd
November this year, at a grand do presided over by our Town Mayor, Mr. Stuart
Pryde.
WAHS lectures are Good for you!
The
inspiration for this volume came from a lecture on Waltham Abbey’s drinking
establishments which Ray gave recently to WAHS. As many of you will remember, it
was so popular that the venerable old Victoria Hall was packed to capacity! The
lecture proved to be the catalyst for bringing together current knowledge with
new discoveries, to such an extent that this new book was produced to reflect
this development in the history of the parish’s pubs.
The book
itself continues the same popular format of the previous two titles, being
easily large enough to do the pictures proper justice and with printing of a
standard easily up for the task. The 109 pages contain well over 200 photographs
each with descriptive text, as well as numerous period advertisements, newspaper
cuttings and maps, which all go to make the subject a lively one.
As well as
the main section of views, Ray and Jonathan have added two further sections.
Beginning the book is a brief history of inns, brewing, and licensing laws,
which also takes a look at the growth of the trade at Waltham Abbey.
At the back
of the book is a brief introduction to the history of pub and inn signs,
complimented by a fascinating pictorial record of every pub and inn of the
district as it is today, each view being accompanied by a shot of the house’s
signboard. Ray and Jonathan’s latest work is quite refreshing, and will
undoubtedly become a valuable resource to future historians.
