ROYDON: Historic Settlement Assessment Report (EFDC, 2004)
A 28-page report which examines the history and topography of the parish of Roydon in great detail, describing each surviving historic building and feature, discussing local evidence from prehistoric, Roman, Saxon, Medieval, and post-medieval periods.
With a bibliography and appendices, a table of known historical remains, and eight different colour maps of the area.
Quote of the day: "No archaeological fieldwork has taken place no date [sic] in Roydon. It is evident however from chance finds within the Roydon area that there is archaeology present..." Very astute!
Nevertheless, this material, produced for Epping Forest District Council, is a gold-mine to anyone interested in forming a Roydon historical society or conservation body. In Adobe Acrobat PDF format.

Thomas Colt (d.1471)
of Nether Hall, Roydon, the patriarch of a family dynasty which included the American inventor of the Colt 45 revolver.

The Historic Settlement Character of the Stansted-M11 sub-region
A report submitted by English Heritage to the "Examination in Public" (EiP) of the draft East of England Plan. "English Heritage intends the report to help the Panel presiding at the EiP to appreciate the issues relating to the historic environment..."
However, "...The scope of the brief does not include an analysis of the character of the landscape, the archaeological resource or individual historic buildings." Strange and sad! Nevertheless, there is some interesting material in this 27-page PDF file.

 Epping  & North Weald

The Copped Hall Trust
Copped Hall is a ruined mansion on the edge of our parish, which has almost a thousand years of history and can list a king, an abbot and a railway magnate amongst its owners! The Copped Hall Trust organises tours and open days of the mansion and its gardens, which they are gradually restoring.

Epping (Victoria County History)

Epping Heritage Project
Its four main "activities" are stated as "setting up a web site of local heritage information which covers many heritage criteria; producing a book, or series of booklets, on specific heritage aspects of the area; producing an archive of local history information accessible by the community (location of the archive has yet to be decided); and finally, producing an education pack in conjunction with local schools, giving talks and organising exhibitions involving local people."
An initial "project meeting" apparently attracted over 100 locals, "and many are being interviewed to contribute information to the archive."
Epping has long needed its own historical society, and this young venture might just be able to evolve into one.

North Weald Airfield Museum
'Housed in the former RAF North Weald airbase, this museum tells the story of a famous airfield that protected London during two world wars, and of the people who lived, worked, flew, fought and died there since the airfield opened in 1916. A particular feature of the museum is the detailed history of the airfield, from the time it opened until the RAF left in 1964. It is without doubt one of the best documented former RAF stations.'

Loughton (Victoria County History )

The Loughton Festival
The first Loughton Festival was held in April 2007 with a surprisingly wide range of events, held in appropriately varied venues around the locality. It was an outstanding success, even leading to suggestions for offshoot projects, and plans for the 2008 Festival are well under way.

The National Jazz Archive
A national repository and research centre, based at Loughton, for all sorts of ephemera and memorabilia relating to jazz.

Loughton in History
A short and inspiring account of Loughton's development from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. It is written as an introduction to, and is followed by, an equally well-written comprehensive history of Methodism in Loughton and South-West Essex, from the mid 19th century to the present day. PDF format.

Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge
Constructed for Henry VIII in 1543 as a three-floor grandstand for VIP guests to watch staged deer hunts and even to shoot their crossbows at the deer from the upper floors, this venue for royal Tudor ‘corporate hospitality’ is open throughout the year, with displays of Tudor costume and carpentry, and replica Tudor foods and kitchenware . Free entry.

Epping Forest Festival
An enormously popular annual event which attracts a wide range of exhibitors and visitors from near and far. Events on the day include medieval jousting, woodcrafts, and views over the forest canopy in a tall crane. The day is a cosmopolitan melting-pot of ideas, developments and initiatives from many different places, both city and country, all brought together by a love for the Forest.

The Friends of Epping Forest
Their central purpose is to ensure the Forest is protected in accordance with the 1878 Act which saved it from development.

A History of the Epping Forest District
A new section of the EFDC website, devoted to the district's heritage. Sub-sections include Archaeology, the District Council's coat-of-arms, Copped Hall, the Epping Forest District Museum, a history of the district (which focuses mainly on Waltham Abbey: "Waltham Abbey throughout the earlier years exerted enormous influence over the whole forest area and the later decline of the abbey coincided with the shrinking of the forest"), local historical figures, North Weald Airfield Museum, and local sites and monuments. Very wide-ranging, and an effort to be praised.

High Beech Church parish

High Beech Church's Bells
Some photos of the thirteen strikingly unusual bells in High Beech Church's steeple, pasted into a PDF document. The way they are rung, via a system of lever-operated wires, is more reminiscent of a chiming automaton than a church!
