William Winters:
A Manuscript History of Waltham Abbey
In his will, local historian
William Winters (1834-93) desired that his unpublished manuscripts be
printed. At last, over a century later, WAHS is proud to
fulfil his wishes.
Penned circa 1890, this work
traces the history of Waltham Abbey using original documents, deeds,
charters and other historical works, interspersed with considerable local
knowledge.
Though there is inevitably
some overlap with Winters' The History of Waltham Abbey (publ. 1888)
much of the material in this work is original and serves to complement and
extend the earlier book. Comparison of the two texts would also reward
research into Victorian local historians and their methods.
Includes a modern index of
about 1,250 people named in the text, and numerous original illustrations,
old views, etc.
