Contributing to Communication

Your Magazine Needs You!

Communication would not exist without contributions from club members. From a simple log of a radio station received recently to a complete article, all are welcome. This page contains information on the formats that we prefer for those contributions to the magazine and the methods by which you can send them to us. We have also produced some custom forms that you can print out directly from this website and use for sending your logs in. Please take a little time to read this page if you are thinking of sending something in and feel free to print a copy this article along with the forms as a reference.

How the Magazine is Compiled

The deadline for contributions is usually the LAST BUT ONE WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. This is the last day that postal contributions can be accepted for forwarding to the Section Editors in time for the magazine's publication. E-mails may be accepted slightly later, up to midnight on Friday.

The Section Editors compile their sections and e-mail the completed pages back to the General Editor over the weekend following the deadline. Communication is then put together and sent to the printers electronically first thing on Monday morning. Printing is usually very quick and completed copies are usually ready to be posted to members within a couple of days.

When space permits, relevant and topical articles are generally included in full (at the editor's discretion), whereas loggings and QSLs are compiled by Section Editors who sort and order them so that they can be presented in the magazine in a cohesive way. This is a task that takes quite some time and effort and you can help to limit the editors' workloads by reading this article and organising your contributions in the most helpful way.

Types of Contribution

Contributions to Communication take the following forms:

Letters and Articles

We are always pleased to receive letters for publication along with any relevant articles such as holiday listening reports, station features, DXpeditions, receiver reviews, book reviews, radio/TV history, and so on. These may be sent via e-mail or on paper. please follow these guidelines when you prepare your article:

If you submit your contribution via e-mail they should be in one of the following formats:

Pictures

Communication is printed by a high speed digital process so good-quality photocopies or scans of QSLs, station logos, newspaper cuttings etc are always welcome for inclusion where space permits. Anything that copies or scans well can be reproduced. Digital photographs can also be reproduced but, as with scans, please only send these if the attachment is under 3MB. Digital photos and scans are best taken on intermediate pixel settings to ensure that the size of the digital image is small enough for it to be emailed. If you have the camera or scanner set to the highest quality (which is often the default setting), this is likely to result in a very large file size and the digital images may then be too large to send via email.

DX News/UK News

If you have news about any broadcasting station (except pirate radio) that may be of interest send it to either of these sections. News may cover such things as new transmitters, new frequencies, new addresses or contact details, major programming or schedule changes, new relay sites, change of ownership, station renaming, etc, etc. Originals or photocopies of any station handouts or newspaper cuttings are also welcome. Please remember to write your name on each item so that we know who to credit for the information.

Ether to Speaker - equipment reviews

This occasional section reports on receivers, aerials and other listening hardware. Your comments and reviews on receivers or any listening accessory are always welcome, especially new products.

Loggings

Most contributions are in the form of radio station reception loggings. There are currently five separate logbook sections and logs for each of these must be on a separate sheet or clearly separated if sent by e-mail:

Logs submitted to these sections should be arranged in a particular way. Please click here to read all about this.
