HOW TO INTERPRET THE RESULTS

The analysis results are contained in a jargon free, “user friendly”, three-page report:

The first section of page one of the report contains what is the most important information, the soil pH level. The information includes, the actual pH of the sample, the optimum pH to aim for, to suit the particular plants that you want to grow. Also included are precise instructions of how to adjust the pH if necessary to suit your particular soil type.

The next section contains the level of nutrients in your soil measured in milligrams per litre of soil. This is then reflected as a level, i.e. HIGH, MODERATE or LOW. Contained in square brackets, after the nutrient levels is an index number. These refer to the ADAS index, which is used to calculate the amount of fertiliser required, to bring your soil up to optimum fertility.

The next section, if requested, deals with the soil conductivity, which is measured in micro siemens per litre. This variable measures soil salinity. If the soil salinity is too high, it has an adverse effect on a plants ability to absorb water and nutrients. High concentrations of salts usually occur from over zealous applications of fertilisers, especially in protected culture, i.e. greenhouse or polytunnel. In these environments, the flushing of the soil by rain does not occur. Corrective measures are suggested in this section if required.

The last section on page 1 is the comments section. Any comments regarding nutrient levels, or special liquid feeding recommendations will be recorded here.

This is where the physical analysis of your soil is recorded, plus organic matter levels, if requested. Here the percentage of sand, silt, and clay are recorded, along with any recommendations for improving soil structure and composition. An assessment of soil type and classification is also made.

Page 3 is the advice and recommendations page. Here, the results of the nutrient analysis are translated into fertiliser requirements. The fertilisers recommended are readily obtainable from your garden centre. Various options are given, either ready-made formulation, or separate singular nutrient suppliers. Amounts are given as grams per square metre as well as imperial, ounces per square yard.

All that remains for you to do is to calculate the area to be fertilised. Weigh the required amount of fertiliser, and then apply evenly over the whole area, bearing in mind any special instructions given on the soil analysis report, i.e. when to apply etc.
