UK Gardening Weather from the BBC

We all know how important dietary nutrition is for our own health and well-being but what about our plants? The soil test is an excellent way to measure soil fertility. It is an inexpensive way of maintaining good plant health and maximum crop productivity. In areas under intense cultivation for many years, plants remove nutrients from the soil faster than the natural soil processes can replace them. Therefore, periodic soil testing is necessary and the only tool available to quantitatively determine current soil nutrient levels, discover any deficiencies, and to correct where necessary, to allow plants the optimum growing conditions and maximise productivity.
