Cleethorpes Athletic Club took a number of Athletes to compete in Scunthorpe’s Quibell Park open cross-country meeting. In conditions that was ideal to cross-country running there was again a few individual successes as well as team successes. Starting with the Under 11 girls, there were two girls Bethany Myers and Jodie Strachan, who have only just started cross-country running. They were a little nervous at the start of their race but did well to finish in what was a very fast race in 30th and 31st places respectively in what was quite a large field. In the Under 11 Boys there was only one Cleethorpes runner in William Soady, who was returning from injury, to finish 21st. Next on the line were the Under 13 Girls, who seem to be our most represented age group along with the Under 13 Boys. Leader of the pack was Sarah Davey who finished a very commendable 4th place. Sarah seems to have carried her track form into the Cross-country arena at the moment because she has finished in the top five in all of her races so far. Hannah Dobbs who finished in 17th place and Haley Strachan who finished in 21st place ably supported Sarah. These three made up the team that finished in 5th place only ten points outside the medal placings. In addition, Danielle Gilchrist was running her first Under 13 race after recently celebrating her 11th birthday to finish in 30th place. Onto the Under 13 Boys, again there was an abundance of athletes competing for Cleethorpes. The team was led by Tom Soady, who has not finished outside the top three so far this season, who finished a superb 2nd. Tom was joined by two Debutants in the cross-country arena in Tom Hammerton and David Stembridge. These two finished in 6th and 10th places, these three combining in winning the first team award. Also in this age group, there was Andrew Craven who finished in 15th and Royce Coates who finished in 21st place. Moving onto the Under 15 Girls, saw the familiar athletes in Louise Yorston, Lisa Holness and Gemma Holmes, these three finished in 7th, 11th and 18th places respectively and combined to gain the 3rd placed team award. Also, in this age group was Rebecca Gilchrist who finished in 21st place. Rebecca should feel pleased with her performance because this is the first time she has competed for Cleethorpes in two years due to injury. In the Under 15 Boys we had one competitor in Karl Crampton who was competing in his first race of the season, Karl did very well to finish in 7th place. The Under 17 Men started their race at the same time as the Junior/Senior/Veterans men race. Tom Shaw was the only Under 17 men’s athlete competing for Cleethorpes and he finished in 9th place. James Hudson was our sole athlete in the combined mens race and he excelled himself in finishing in 13th place. Finally Cleethorpes had three athletes competing in the combined Under 17/Junior/senior/veterans women’s race. Helen McLoughlin finished in 11th, Lisa Stafford in 19th place and Jacqueline Rea in 20th place. These three were the 5th placed team, 7 points away from a medal winning position.
