NEWSLETTER Jan 2004 Issue 8 NYD 10K Race Another successful New Years Day 10K took place at the start of the road season for the club, with 163 runners finishing the race. The men’s winner was Andrew Swearman from Birchfield in a time of 31:37, and the ladies No. 1 Melanie Hayward from Beverley finishing in 35:18. The first Cleethorpes man was Gary Coulam (the new senior men’s road/cross country captain), placed 7th, and the first Cleethorpes lady, Bev Wilson, 3rd Lady. With almost 40 Cleethorpes vests out on the day and 7 in the top 20, it was a good day for the club. A big thanks to all those involved in the organization , running and marshalling of this event, it is one of our biggest and goes a long way to contributing towards club funds, more on that later in the AGM report. Dave Roberts Dave has finally left the committee after giving many years of great service to the club. He has not disappeared completely, and will still be around to advise and represent the club at county meetings. A big thanks goes to him for all his help since joining Cleethorpes AC in 1976 Marshaller’s Marshallers are still required for the Clee XC beach race. Also help is needed for the day before to set up the course. It all happens on the weekend 7/8 Feb 04. see Don Atkins at the club hut if you can help. Thanks Cleethorpes AC Annual General Meeting AGM took place at the Club HQ hut on Tuesday 27 Jan 04 at 7:54pm Track & Field The senior men’s year was not so good, but our ladies did well to com 3rd in their division, just missing out on promotion. This new season starts with the men & women competing jointly, with the club placed in this new system in the 3rd division. Not a bad place to start. The junior women’s team did well as did our juniors competing in the Young Athletes League, remaining in Division 1. The average turnout for the Young Athletes was a very credible 30 plus for each meeting, not an easy feat. Well done to all. Cross Country Again the U17’s did the club proud, with a core of 30 runners including a number of U11’s. These youngsters ran very well winning more medals then previous years, largely due to their hard work and the work of their coaches, Barry Dobbs and John Cullum. The men’s senior cross country support has been very disappointing with very few competitors from Cleethorpes AC. Road Races A successful year, with the club putting on 4 x Croxby, 2 x Covenham, 2 x 5 milers, the Winter 5k prom series and the NYD 10K. A total of 14 races, with when combined with Track and field and other events brought in a 1/4 of the clubs revenue. Membership The Club has an active membership of 174 members, 91 men and 83 women. Of the men 25 are 40+ and 29 U13. The women’s figure is 21 at 40+ and 34 U13. Finance The biggest expense as ever has been transport, but the loss this year has been reduced due to a restructuring of prices charged. A point to note is on a few occasions the bus provided was under—utilized significantly. This was largely down to the seniors, so remember if only a few of you are going, why not share cars? We did have some good sponsorship, and in all a much better year financially than in previous years, Club Constitution The club constitution has been changed by reducing the committee numbers down from 19 to 15, with all those on the committee having a job to fulfill. Guidance notes are in the process of being written to aid smooth handover of key committee personnel, something the club has to do to fulfill ‘Clubmark’ rules, a status the club is trying to attain Data Protection The Data Protection Act requires the Club to obtain permission from any member to hold information on that individual. To that end every club member must sign a new form with their details on it. These forms will be available on the club website and in the Club HQ. New Captains New Club captains were voted in for the Senior Men and Women Road and Cross Country. They were Gary Coulam and Jenny Clark. There were no nominations for the men and women Track & Field Captains, so anyone wishing to take up this post, please contact the committee or your coach. Other Discussion At the end of the AGM there was much discussion about encouraging new members to the club, espe cially younger people. The problem area seems to be once the youngsters get to 17 they do not continue with the sport, so how can we change this? If you have any initiatives let the committee or your coach know.
Coaches MeetingThere will be a coaches meeting on Tuesday 17 Feb 04 at the YMCA, starting at 7:45pm. All coaches, and anyone interested in coaching are welcome to attend. The club is always looking for new coaches or assistance, if you want to help and put something back in to the sport then please come along, or contact any of the coaches at the track on Tuesday or Thursday evening. |
