Career 1976-1995

Company   :   ISI (Mars Inc.)
Role   :   Telecomms 1991-1995
Details   :   Telecommunications Project Manager consulting on £1m projects, often involving software technology e.g. Oracle, Holos, Numetrix etc., while individually proposing, securing funding and implementing £50k infrastructure components e.g. DECnet/SNA channel attach gateways(late '94), and many router installations.

Leading the introduction of new technologies such as Cisco Routers, Chipcom Hubs and HP Openview into Mars Europe and leading Remote LAN access and Security projects in late-95 using Shiva LANrover and Security Dynamics ACE.

Project manager role involved in co-ordinating several external suppliers and remotely advising local support teams at other Mars sites.

Recognised as the TCP/IP guru at Mars. Involved in Internet connections in US.

Early '95 - Managed a team of 4 at the Maidenhead site Information Centre during a critical period installing Chipcom hubs, rolling-out Novell 4.0 and upgrading token ring from 4 to 16mbps for some 300 workstations.
Role   :   ACUMEN 1985-1991
Details   :   Software Development management and technical leadership with ACUMEN a software product. ACUMEN was used within Mars and the National Market Research Agency, as well as being sold externally for DSS/EIS applications to blue chip companies including BP, ITnet (Cadbury's) and CEC(European Commission). The product was highly portable across IBM mainframe, DEC VAX, OS/2 and latterly Unix platforms.

Initially a single team of 10 associates with 3 in Development, the "business within a business" grew to 50 with a 10 man development team and turnover reached £4m pa.

1988 led the X-windows development.

'90-'91 created a User Interface research project under the Teaching Company Scheme in conjunction with Brunel University. Championed the introduction of Quality Management to ISO9001. Managed the Documentation Team creating 3 significant manuals in a year.
Role   :   Factory Systems 1982-1985

Recognised as the Mars DEC guru, implemented a major (100 Mb!) Oracle database in the UK on VAX in 1983. Built PDP-11's from board level components, wrote device drivers and code and even coded and blew custom bootstrap PROMS.

Company   :   BP Petroleum Development Ltd. Sullom Voe,
Role   :   Site Software Engineer
Details   :   As Westinghouse's involvement in commissioning SAMICS was concluding, I was enticed to join BP. Living in Shetland as the site Software Engineer, reporting to the Senior Control Engineer, responsible for final commissioning, maintenance and IT operation of SAMICS and of several other systems including the Ninian pipeline monitoring systems. Whilst primarily a software role, there was close liaison with computer hardware engineers and colleagues in Instrumentation. This was an excellent place to learn how a system behaves in a real working environment.

Company   :   CAP Ltd. (became Sema, then Schlumberger)
Role   :   Trainee to Leading A/P
Details   :   After initial training, spent a year programming small financial systems and then a year for an MOD establishment developing Mathematical models and robust implementations of them. Followed by almost 3 years on a major project for Westinghouse B & S Co. developing the Supervisory and Management Information System (SAMICS) for the Sullom Voe Oil Terminal. Towards the end of the project I was the lead programmer/designer.
