Barry's social activities

The best game ever is Go

I've played Bridge since school days.

Currently playing mostly at Twyford and South Bucks Bridge Centre

Occasionally playing again at Bradshaws Club and Loddon Vale.

Swimming - manage a 1hr, over 100 lengths, continuous swim at least every couple of weeks. Had been thinking for years that I really ought to do another BT Swimathon soon - the last was 1994 - 5km in 1hr 46m. So entered for 2006 - March 25th - and completed in a respectable 1hr 50m. It seems to have lost the BT branding in 2006. Swimathon 200 length 5km charity swim. This year 80% goes to NCH and 20% to local charities.

Walking - 2002-2005 usually a couple of walks every weekend - often over 5 miles.

Reading - mostly The Times (subscription), technology, philosophy and psychology.

All time favourites include:

My taste in fiction runs to Iain Banks (and Iain M. Banks), John Fowles,
Asimov and Clarke have always had interesting views
and a recent : The Mind Game - hector macdonald - in the same vein as The Magus.

The Sunday Times Teaser often succumbs to a 30 minute assault with a spreadsheet. Feel free to ask if I have the solution to any particular one of the past few years.

I have a programming interest in Othello and 3-D Noughts and Crosses (4x4x4, sometimes known as Qubic).

My 3-D O & X program was written in VB in 1999. Whilst not as 'absolute' as some Java versions I've seen at least my version explains why it makes moves and shows the analysis scoring.

For more about Qubic follow this and subsequent links.
