Contracting 1996-1997
Self-employed and through my company BJC Consulting Ltd.,
I undertook many part-time and overlapping consultancy contracts and interim management roles,
primarily at Phobos, Sema, and Thomas Miller & Co.
At Phobos I automated the conversion of ACUMEN applications from an IBM Mainframe VM/CMS to MVS/TSO/SPF environment.
At Sema I was involved in technical recruitment (50 programmers in 3 months) and some smaller
consulting roles including software strategy setting,
hardware asset usage evaluation and subsequent 1997 budget preparation.
At Thomas Miller & Co. I led the specification and implementation of an HP Openview based network
mananagement system in a varied LAN/WAN environment. Towards the end of the project, during a management shuffle,
I took on Interim management of the whole networking team of 10.
The shorter assignments included:
- SCO installation with Real-time data collector hardware for AEG and
Stansted Airport new baggage line.
- Solaris, SunNetManager, Ciscoworks install and training
for LG Electronics
- Manage the resolution of a Remote LAN access interoperability
issue (PC to AS/400 dial up)
for the NSPCC
- Specify Network Management component for a £1+m 3com ATM proposal
for New Walt Disney, Hammersmith office.
The bid was won, though I was over-committed to participate in the installation.
This period represented my favourite job portfolio style of working,
and would be even more attractive since IR35.
