“Wonderful film! – no wonder it is a classic. Great black and white shots”
“Gripping and touching story beautifully portrayed.
“Superb classic, brilliant acting. I loved the clear diction, such a joy to listen to.”
“Absolutely timeless, just as gripping as when it was originally shown.”

The story of orphan Pip, who becomes a gentleman thanks to a mysterious benefactor. Capturing much of the book's chronological and emotional sweep, David Lean's expressionistic and atmospheric film is the definitive version of this novel and remains one of the most accomplished Dickens adaptations.

“A fine old Hollywood classic! The story rather ruthlessly cut; the sets often primitive by present
day standards but thoroughly enjoyable.”
“Sparkled when Micawber was on. Uriah Heep excellent. Portrayal of silly women hard to take.”
“Not a patch on the Lean Great Expectations but it grew on me. It shows signs of still being an
earlyish talkie – rather melodramatic and phony-looking sets. Some good characterisation
though.”
“Definitely of its time! A bit of a daft story, daftly executed.”

David Copperfield survives the cruelty of his stepfather and the scheming of Uriah Heap to befriend Mr Micawber and romance both Dora and Agnes Wickstone. With an all-star cast - some offbeat, others inspired - this is by far the best Hollywood Dickens adaptation and captures the spirit of the source novel with a fidelity and finesse that was all-too-rarely emulated.
