J Atkinson is remembered on the Skelton War Memorial, the Skelton Church plaque and on the CWGC website.
His address and family in Skelton not yet found.


The 4th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment were formed in August 1914 in Northallerton.
They became part of the 150th Brigade, 50th (Northumbrian) Division.
After landing at Boulogne on the 14th May 1915, the Division took part in most of the actions on the Western Front.
After fighting at Arras the 50th Division was moved up to Ypres where the British offensive which has become known as Passchendaele was in it final phases. Joseph was killed in action here in fighting around Houtholst Forest.
The Tyne Cot is the largest Commonwealth cemetery in the world and the Memorial there lists the names of those 35,000 men who have no known grave.
