Skelton Cross Green about this time

1879 - 17 March. Charles Lewis. a horse driver aged 16, was killed when he fell off the front of a set of tubs and had his head and legs severely crushed.

26 April. Joseph Harker was fined a shilling for taking a naked light beyond a board warning of a place containing gas in Park Mine.

17th May. John Dixon of Skelton gave six 10lb tins of compressed corned beef to the Relief Committee of Boosbeck and Lingdale. They were distributed impartially amongst the worst cases in the district. "South Skelton mines had been idle two to three months and others on short time which caused a great amount of distress in the district."

19th July. Charles Broughton, a deputy at Park Pit, was charged with drunk and riotous and assaulting PC Brough. His wife complained that the publican had got her husband drunk. He was fined 10 shillings for being drunk and one pound for the assault.

28th Aug. South Skelton Mine. Joseph Barker, a miner aged 24, was killed. "A fall of ironstone while he was drilling a hole, a piece of stone which had been shattered by a previous shot fell without warning."

In the Matter of a Bankruptcy Petition against Christopher Lawson, of 13, Boosbeck-road, Skelton Green, in the parish of Skelton, in the North Riding of the county of York, Engineer, Grocer, Provision Dealer, and Beer Retailer. Upon the hearing of this Petition this day, and upon proof satisfactory to the Court of the debt of the Petitioner, and of the trading, and of the act of Bankruptcy alleged ;o have been committed by tbe said Christopher Lawson having been given, it is ordered that the said Christopher Lawson be, and he is hereby, adjudged bankrupt....

A drilling machine in Skelton Shaft mine. Prior to this holes 3 to 5 feet deep were made by hand in the face of the iron ore seam. These were then packed with gunpowder and fired with a fuse. The fuses were firstly a straw, then a squib and finally a safety fuse. Many deaths and injuries occurred as a result of accidental ignition. Note the wooden beams holding up the roof lodged in the sides of the 'bord'. Tunnels, called bords, about 14 feet wide were driven into the seam of ore and then other tunnels made to the sides every 30 to 40 yards, the 'bord and pillar' system, until a chess board effect was cut out everywhere under this area.

The pillars thus formed were finally removed and the roof allowed to collapse. Much subsidence damage occurred as a result on the surface.

4th Oct. Guisborough Petty Sessions. George Bulmer charged with being drunk and riotous at N Skelton. Fined 5s and costs. Defendant said "I get my pay on Saturday, Mr Chaloner. If you give me strap until then you'll get your money." He was removed in custody.

19th Dec. London Gazette. Bankruptcy.
In the Matter of Proceedings for Liquidation by Arrangement or Composition with Creditors, instituted by John Cook, of Skelton Green, in the parish of Skelton, in the county of York, Grocer and Beer Retailer, and of the Havelock Inn, Page-street, New Hendon, in the county of Durham, Beerhouse Keeper. Notice is hereby given, that a First General Meeting of the creditors of the above-named person has been summoned to be held at the offices of Mr. Thomas M. Barren, Solicitor, 20, High-row, Darlington, in the county of Durham, on the 6th day of December, 1879, at eleven o'clock in the forenoon precisely....

1880 - An Education Act made school attendance compulsory from age of five to ten.

17th Jan. North Skelton Mine. Stevenson Ward and Henry Dale, drivers, were each fined 20s for beating a horse unmercifully with a piece of timber.

In this photograph, taken with her sisters about 1880, Isobel is seated second from the right.
She married George H Mohun, a local ironstone mine platelayer.
They had 11 children, two of whom lost their lives in the First World War.
The family lived at 9 Boosbeck Rd, Skelton Green.

24th Jan. The following stood , stood for election to Skelton School Board.
Thomas Petch, farmer of Barns Farm, Skelton.
George Robinson, mines manager of N Skelton.
Mrs Charlotte Wharton, of Skelton Castle.

21st Feb. Robert Bean, miner, of N Skelton, charged with neglecting his wife whereby she became a charge to Guisborough Union. He was unable to live with her due to her drunken conduct. Allowed her 4s per week as maintenance.

8th May. North Skelton got a post office at Mr William Stokoe's, grocer and draper. "The nearest one had been one mile away."

8th May. George Sharpe, a platelayer of Skelton, divorced his wife, who was living with another man, a working miner in Skelton. They had married in 1867 at St Mary's York.

29th May. Mary Woodget was fined 10s for assaulting Sarah Futter at Skelton Green.

5th June.Anne Barron of Skelton was fined 2s 6d for assaulting her mother, Jane Burdon.

19th June. Guisborough Petty Sessions. James Baldwin, miner, of Skelton fined 5s for failing to send his child to school.

15th June. The Local Volunteers name was changed to the 1st Yorkshire North Riding Rifle Volunteer Corps

19th June. Joseph Gillimore, miner of Park Pit, was assaulted between 4 and 5 in the morning by Samuel Loftus, who threatened to knock his head off.

17th July. Skelton Shaft Pit. Joshua Dale, aged 21, Joiner, killed in a fall from a staging 30 feet high ; he stepped onto a plank that was sawn through during repairs. 'He was severely injured and was taken to Guisborough Miners Hospital, where he died the same evening.' Foreman alleged he had been warned not to mount the scaffolding as it was unsafe.

19 July.Skelton Park Pit. William Ord a shifter aged 41, was killed. "in main return; while removing some stone another fall took place from the roof which had been previously examined." William Harrison was severely injured in the same incident, reported by local paper as 'shocking'.

9th Oct. John Mason of Skelton was fined 20 shillings and costs for using obscene language at Skelton Green. 'The inhabitants of Skelton had experienced great annoyance from numbers of men who congregated at the sides of the highway and used language of a profane and vile character.'

30 Oct. Joseph Dixon, miner, assaulted a gamekeeper of Mr Wharton's as he walked between Boosbeck and Skelton on the highway. Fined 40s and costs.

30th Oct. William Jones taken into custody for shouting and being abusive in Boosbeck Rd by PC Brough and PC Edwards, who was assaulted.

6th Nov. John Osborne and William Scott of Skelton were fined 30s and costs for poaching on Mr J T Wharton's land. They were caught by a gamekeeper, called Baker, loitering suspiciously with two dogs at Upleatham.
