JULY. On the 15th the Germans made one last effort and started the Second Battle of the Marne.
On the 18th the Allies counter attacked and for the first time in the year the Germans were forced to retreat.

Lt Aust Henry Ernest. Killed in action age 22 and commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, Haucourt SE of Arras. His home was in
Reading, Berks and he had been commissioned into the Battalion from the London University Officer Training Corps. He had fought with the
Battalion through the 1916 action in the Somme area, during which he was wounded. After the Battalion was reduced to cadre strength in
July 1918 those few remaining were transferred. Lt Aust was sent to the 7th Battalion, the East Yorkshire Regiment and was with them
at the Battle of Epehy at this time when he met his death.

In the years that followed many others, often unremembered on the War Graves site, suffered and
died early deaths as a result of wounds, disease, deprivation and mental shock. If their families were too poor to erect a family
memorial headstone, some have probably vanished from the record forever.
