Cheeky Ones Do!

This badger was photographed in a garden in Port Talbot (South Wales) while climbing to the top of a six foot trellis to reach peanuts, in wire feeders, left out for birds.   In fact, its whole family have been at it every night for around two years!
How do the badgers get to the peanuts inside the wire feeders?..   easy - they yank the bottoms off the feeders with their mouths to let the peanuts fall to the ground, and then climb back down for the feast!   Now who was it that said badgers are dumb animals?

You may have been lucky enough to see this badger up to its antics in the BBC wildlife show Clever Dicks, broadcast on the 30 April (2000).   The show gives demonstrations on the intelligence of wildlife species, and some have even been shown to actually reason problems out.

Many thanks go out to the owners of the garden property shown in the photograph for their help, and for their kind permission to reproduce and display the image in this site (copyright applies).
