These are new pages to catalogue Nigel's "Updates" on life in Trindad - much appreciated by those of us far from home... They are a wonderful mixture of reportage and personal observation and I am really sorry I lost so many of them in a stupid software glitch last year! I had saved the whole lot, right from the beginning of the Pointe-a-Pierre web site, so if anyone has any of those old ones and would like to email them to me, I'd be really happy! The ones below begin in 2001. Nigel's own web site (from where these pages are taken) is @: http://www.papmemories.net/ |

Wednesday, November 14, 2001 4:55 pm Subject: Update Hi All, Long time no see no hear...hope that all is well with you all. Life has been very hectic here but very quiet on the PaP site and related activities. Been in touch with Peter Hughes who is going through a tough time as a result of the loss of one of his boats in Belize with loss of life. He is finding out that it is a cruel and thankless world out there. He is staying brave and staying in touch to the degree that time will allow. From all accounts Diana Plummer (Becerra) had a super time at Notinghill's carnival....lots of good pics of the action on her site which is being continuously updated....cheers Diana. Barrie Fernandes checked in on the guestbook.....Hi Barrie! Brenda Woolfe checked in and was asking about info on how to make rotis........not opening a roti shop, but it was one of her son's birthday and wanted him to try it. Martin Herring checked in and is looking for Pauline Arch. Kim Webb checked in. Thor Lars Overland checked in and is looking for Sean Bailey and Christopher McCartney. Our young grandson just turned two months and is doing fine....a super little fellow loved very much by us all. Got an e-mail from a friend with a bumper sticker that read...."If I had known about grandchildren before, I would have had them first"...great stuff. Well settled in to our new home....just came back from a trip to San Antonio and the only thing I bought was a cordless drill at Home Depot.......domestic Darwent. Our life in PoS is very different....much more to do, back in track with our friends who all had made the move before us, near the kids and grand, but still with all of that it feels strange driving down to San Fernando. Last night I had a political meeting in San F'do and went down early to see if I could catch-up with my old activist and constituency captains....met quite a few but it felt really strange leaving them to head "home" to PoS. Feels even stranger going to our old neighbourhood and home....brrrrrr!!...will take time. 1 1/2 hours to our office in PoS and 40 mins to the office in San F'do via Santa Cruz......rough stuff!! The election campaign has taken on a welcome air of normalcy for the most part with the political parties now concentrating on their campaigns and less on seditious rumblings and activities. The expected exception is the dissident three who broke away from the ruling party, now realize that they are politically dead, and trying to disturb the political process with a campaign of mis-information, double standards, hypocrisy, and open threat to "lock people up". If their campaign takes root and the opposition party wanting to take power supports it conveniently, they will find that it will come around and bite them in the butt later.......the enemy of my enemy is not always my friend, and supporting campaigns of threat and intimidation even on an arms length basis is short term expediency only. Lets see what the electorate does....the people of the country are smarter than their leaders. Baaaad dry season coming up....we have had a very dry wet season and will start the dry season with a big deficit of water in storage. Shame though because the weather has been quite nice...the factors that have kept the rain at bay seem to have kept the sky clear and the temperatures down. Keep well y'all.....still trying to get back in to rhythm such that I can start re-building the site and then improving it. Regards Nigel. |
