Chip to Chip Timing

The Committee has agreed to Chip to Chip timing as well as Gun to Chip timing for 2009.

Glorious Weather For The 2008 WHM

In almost the first time in living memory the Wokingham Half Marathon was blessed with glorious weather. The morning started off with a sharp frost which meant that the water supply to the toilet blocks at the gate was frozen. This was only a minor inconvenience though as the majority of toilets were self contained units. Despite the reservations about the new start and the chaos which appeared to exist 5 minutes before the start time this quickly resolved itself with some pleading from Dick Hughes (Commentator from Running Imp) and following a 2 minute delay while the position of some cones were adjusted at the gate the race went off smoothly, with the field clearing the start line within 5 minutes. All attentions then switched to the junior “Fun Run” where the seniors went off 4 minutes before the juniors to prevent the stampede of last year. All seemed to go ahead safely. With gun to chip timing this year the finish of the main race was simplified and congratulations to Sports Systems for a professional job. Can I thank everyone who helped on the day including all the marshals, the people at the water stations, St. John for ministering to our slight ailments, to Raynet for keeping us all in touch with each other, the Police for keeping the course traffic free and the Heavy Mobs from Balfour Beatty and Quadron who placed the equipment around the course. Finallly, we hope there has been lots of money raised by us and individually for charities.

Mainly could I thank the athletes who came along; without them the rest would be rather pointless.

The Event

A well established and well organised event, the perfect preparation for the London Marathon. The course is fast and generally flat, all roads are closed to traffic. The British Association of Road Races (BARR) has given us a Gold rating for the first time. Due to the large number of runners, we are not able to accept entries on the day. For 2008 we have decided to change the course slightly, so that runners will leave Cantley Park from the front entrance avoiding the bottle neck and returning back the same way for the finish. This could also enable us to increase capacity to 2750 in future years, we are restricting the 2009 race to 2,750. The new course has now been measured and verified. Chip Timing was an experiment this year and very successful, we are introducing Start to Finish chip timing for 2009. Online entries will once again be available through Runner’s World. Please book early to avoid disappointment as this race fills up quickly. All profits go to charities

Corporate Sponsorship

The race which is supported by Wokingham District Council, has continued to attract sponsorship from local companies, Accountants Titcheners formally Raphael Vive and Co, estate agents Richard Worth, Mitsubishi Motors, and sports goods manufacturers Mizuno with Apex Sports. Flowtech Fluid Handling and The Pilates Studio are also providing support. Technical database support, web site administration and race entry administration is being provided by local company Chrian Solutions.
