In almost the first time in living memory the Wokingham Half Marathon was blessed with glorious weather. The morning started off with a sharp frost which meant that the water supply to the toilet blocks at the gate was frozen. This was only a minor inconvenience though as the majority of toilets were self contained units. Despite the reservations about the new start and the chaos which appeared to exist 5 minutes before the start time this quickly resolved itself with some pleading from Dick Hughes (Commentator from Running Imp) and following a 2 minute delay while the position of some cones were adjusted at the gate the race went off smoothly, with the field clearing the start line within 5 minutes. All attentions then switched to the junior “Fun Run” where the seniors went off 4 minutes before the juniors to prevent the stampede of last year. All seemed to go ahead safely. With gun to chip timing this year the finish of the main race was simplified and congratulations to Sports Systems for a professional job. Can I thank everyone who helped on the day including all the marshals, the people at the water stations, St. John for ministering to our slight ailments, to Raynet for keeping us all in touch with each other, the Police for keeping the course traffic free and the Heavy Mobs from Balfour Beatty and Quadron who placed the equipment around the course. Finallly, we hope there has been lots of money raised by us and individually for charities.
Mainly could I thank the athletes who came along; without them the rest would be rather pointless.
