Want to help?
Children sailing requires a lot of parental and volunteer help. If you would
like to get involved and can help with any of the following then please get
in touch. Shore duties such as boat rigging training rescue boat driver, socials
such as the BBQ
.lThe Optimist
The Optimist dinghy (or Oppie) is a wonderful boat for children to learn to
sail. It has a single sail, can accommodate 1 or 2 children, is very stable,
and is very difficult to capsize. Children from 8 years upwards can learn
to sail the Oppie with the Harp Young Sailors (HYS).
Harp Young Sailors (HYS)
Harp Young Sailors comprises instructors and trainees from three of the sailing
clubs on the Welsh Harp Wembley SC, BTYC and Seahorse SC. The three clubs
combined provide a variety of youth boats - Toppers, Lasers and Picos - which
supplement the Wembley Sailing Club's 12 club Oppies to provide a comprehensive
range of craft to suit all ages and experience.
We try to make sessions as interesting as possible for the children, by having
picnic cruises, mini races and ball games on the water, followed by a tea,
in the clubhouse or a picnic or BBQ on the grass..
The
Children are given the responsibility for rigging the boats (the younger children
helped by their parents)
There is a separate fee payable for training with the Harp Young Sailors.
Each child must be a junior or family member of one of the constituent clubs:
WSC, SSC or BTYC, and one or more parents must be a full, family or social
member of one of the clubs. The HYS membership fee is £80 for the full season,
& £40 for late season.
n addition to the Sunday sessions, HYS may also run school holiday training
courses subject to demand, for which an additional fee is charged.
HYS Safety
At all times children must wear buoyancy aids which are supplied by the club.
Parents or Guardians must remain within the vicinity of the pontoons in order
to take charge of their children when they come ashore. Safety boat cover
is provided whilst children are on the water.

The Sunday sessions start at 2:00 for the beginners and 2:30 for the intermediate/
racers. Note that children and parents are expected to arrive earlier so that
children are dressed and ready to sail at these times.
For the smooth and safe running of the training, children must be present
at the briefing to be allocated a boat and to know what is expected of them.
Note that latecomers may not be allowed on the water.
Parents/guardians must attend the HYS organized activities with their child,
unless they have made arrangements with another responsible adult. They must
remain nearby, on WHSA premises, within sight of and responsible at all times
for the child in their care.
Where children are left in the care of a responsible adult, parents are required
to leave full contact details and must be contactable at all times.
Parents will also be asked to provide the full details of an alternative contact
in case of emergency. Children must be signed in and out before and after
each session, and the adult responsible for that day must put his/her name
alongside the child's.
HYS is a volunteer organization and we rely on parent helpers to run training.
Parents are expected to help- no experience necessary!
A parents' rota will be organized to help out with jobs such as beachmaster
(helping to get the boats on the water), manning the kettle, preparing the
sandwiches for after, etc.
If you cannot make a date for training we would appreciate if you could please
ring/ text/ email Donna (07966459137) (nrthnd9@aol.com ) to let us know as
far in advance of the training date as possible.
We look forward to seeing you for the new HYS season
