The RS200 Class

Its not just about racing though, with a good social scene both locally at the Club and when at away events - Wembley is usually the most represented Club on the circuit.

Decent competitive second hand boats can be bought for about £3,500. And they hardly devalue. The RS200 is great fun to sail and is surprisingly forgiving.

If you would like to know more about joining one of the best sailing facilities in North West London and being a part of one of the most successful racing classes of the modern time, then contact the ....class captain, or pop along to the club around lunchtime on a Sunday and meet the members.

Here are the observations of the Laser Class Captain on as he calls you

The squatters on the Laser Beach
The RS200 Nationals came to close a few days ago, having posted an extremely impressive turnout of 127 boats in what’s probably the most competitive 2-person hiking class in the UK (sorry, Colin!). Wembley had 8 boats there, with Steve Jannering (ex-Laserer) and Chris O’Neill leading the Wembley Wanderers, scoring a 23rd overall - including a 3rd place; imagine having 124 boats behind you! (without going on a narrow-boat holiday). Steve’s cousin Rob, sailing with Marianthe (Charmian’s daughter), finished 30th. WSC’s finishes: 23rd, 30th, 48th, 77th, 79th, 88th, 89th and 114th. Incidentally, the (clear) winner – Roger Gilbert – also (clearly) won Merlin Rocket Salcombe Week a couple of months ago. (I hope his mantelpiece collapses) I’ve attached the results if you're interested (nicked from theDailySail.com – so don’t blame me for Wembley being repeatedly miss-spelt)

The RS200
Designed in 1995 by Phil Morrison, the.. RS200 , is a two person 13' long modern racing dinghy, it features an uncomplicated asymmetric spinnaker and low sheet loads on the sail controls. It can be sailed by almost anyone, and all up weights of between 16 and 26 Stone can be competitive. This makes it particularly popular for parents to sail with children, or for two adults.

Wembley Sailing Club has an active fleet of around 15 RS200's with boat ages ranging from 8 years old to some that have been recently purchased. Our fleet members range in age from teenagers to over 60. We are a very friendly fleet and newcomers are made to feel very welcome.

Sailing takes place mainly on Sunday mornings, with two races each day. There are four points series covering the seasons of the year. In the summer, there is a Wednesday evening series. The club racing is very close, with races often being won/lost by a boat length..

The RS200 also benefits from being one of the largest fleets with the... National RS Class Association. Many Wembley SC members take part in the RS Association organised training days, which are aimed at improving club sailors racing abilities. A number of members also compete on both the National and South East Area Series circuits with various degrees of success. A Wembley team won the Bronze fleet at the 2005 Nationals, and a number of teams have won prizes in the Silver and Bronze fleets at Open Meetings. There is also a European championship, which in 2006 will be on Lake Garda in Italy - great for a holiday and some warm weather sailing.
