On the 27th of November 1773 Richard Tomes and Hannah Bromley were married in the parish church of Alderminster, seven miles south-east of Stratford on Avon in the county of Warwickshire. They had six sons and one daughter, all baptised at the church of St. Mary's in nearby Whitchurch. This is the story of the search for Richard's origins and of the lives and times of the family.

St. Mary's Church
The simple Norman arch doorway of St Mary's church. Parts of the building pre-date the Norman Conquest and Whitchurch appears in the Doomsday book. A William Thommes was rector here in 1462. The first Tomes parish register entry is for the birth of Martha, daughter of Richard and Elinor Toms in 1686.
