My name is Chris Towle and I was born on 3rd of May 1947 in the village of New Holland, Lincolnshire, where the paddle steamer ferries crossed over the River Humber to Hull. I lived in the village until 1970 when I took the plunge and joined the Royal Air Force.  My intention was to work on aircraft engines, airframes or electronics or something along those lines. All went well with the aptitude tests until the medic had a look at me and told me I had flat feet. That put an end to any technical type of trade and I was offered alternative employment such as clerk, clerk sec, telephonist and a few other sitting down jobs. None of these trades excited me greatly. The recruiting sergeant had a rethink and asked if I would like to be trained as a "WOP", I hadn't a clue what he was talking about but he made it sound so interesting and challenging that with no more to do I signed on the dotted line and spent the next 9 years of my life as a wireless operator in the R.A.F. At the end of my engagement I decided that I had had enough of sitting in front of radio sets etc and promoted myself from corporal to Mr, and came to live in Grimsby. My interest in amateur radio came out of looking for a hobby, I tried golf but lost my ball, I then read in the local evening newspaper that there was a radio amateurs course about to begin, I enrolled in Sept 95, passed the radio amateurs examinations in May 96, the morse test in June 96 and was allocated the callsign M0AJT. My interest at the moment in amateur radio is in the HF bands, using mainly the morse key and working other stations throughout the world. I also enjoy contests, a little bit of home construction and experimenting with aerials, (we didn't have antenna's in the R.A.F.) I am also a member of RAFARS, my membership number 3990. So once again I find myself sitting in front of a radio set, its surprising how much more enjoyable it is when you don't have to do it and can turn it on and off at your own leisure.
