My name is George and I have been licensed since 1975. I have been interested radio from the mid fifties when I first heard the shipping channels on the household radio. I found the coast station calling tapes that were sent using Morse code fascinating. The next step was to find a copy of the Morse code in a book and spend a lot of time decoding the many different stations that could be found between 100 and 200 Mtrs on the Trawler Band. In 1961 I joined the Royal Naval Wireless Reserve Station on fish dock island, Grimsby docks, for the sole purpose of learning Morse Code and being able to take a small transmitter home and transmit on the Naval 'nets'. Sadly, due to a change of jobs, I had to leave in 1969. I kept my interest in radio by building simple radio receivers, audio amplifiers and other bits and bobs from the Practical Wireless Magazine. Eventually I realised that I was missing the operating side and in 1973 decided to take the RAE. After a successful result in the 1974 RAE and the Morse test soon afterwards. I was going to wait for a personalised callsign (GJS) but after six months the progress through the callsigns was that slow I applied for the next available call. I operate mainly on 80 / 40 Mtrs, although lately I only seem to go on for the contests. My other hobby, that also includes a lot of radio, is aviation. I'm interested in both military and civil aircraft and have a comprehensive database of Fxs, Callsigns and Selcals. |
