REMINDERS

1.  Please remember to always save your work

2.  If you are using  WINCENS (INCENS)
SEE THE ARTICLE BELOW  FOR TIPS ON BACK UP

3.  PROBLEMS WITH  OCCUPATION STATUS COLUMNS,
     11, 12, AND 13
on the Micro Fiche

EMPLOYER,       EMPLOYED    OR     NEITHER

SEE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW FOR BOTH  INCENS AND SSCENS

4. Would all New Transcribers  using SSCENS (Spreadsheet)  please remember to send their first 6 pages to one of the nominated Helpers for checking. This is to ensure that ALL the Columns have been filled in correctly and the correct number of digits have NOT been exceeded.

SPREADSHEET WARNINGS :  SSCENS

It has been found that where HOUSEHOLDS go over to the next page
some transcribers are repeating the schedule number again.

PLEASE DO NOT.  This is causing enormous problems for the Checker.

When  the Household goes over the page, all you have to put is the
NEW PAGE NUMBER ..Please do not repeat the Schedule number
unless
it is a NEW HOUSEHOLD.

Column R ...OCCUPATION STATUS

The Census the form includes three columns to be marked if the person
was            "Employer"     "Employee"     or     "Neither"
FreeCEN Transcribes this information into a single column.

Do not make assumptions!
If these columns are all empty, then leave Column R empty.
Otherwise enter either  a     R   E or N  as follows:-

R       for "employeR"                         (If there is a 'X' in column 12)

E       for "employeE"                         (If there is a 'X' in column 13)

N       for "Not employer/employee"   (If there is a 'X' in column 14)

If a person is marked for both "employeR" and "employeE": enter  R

BACK UP OF  WINCENS  (INCENS)

First day of   backup:          Floppy number    (i.e. if you say start on Monday,)

Second day of   backup:     Floppy  number 2 ( i.e. could be  Tuesday)

Third day of   backup:        Floppy  number 3   i.e.( could be  Wednesday)

Then  back to the beginning , using them in rotation.

i.e. use Floppy  number 1 for  say Thursday (or whatever day you are transcribing)

Use Floppy  number 2 for Friday  (or whatever day you are transcribing)

use Floppy  number 3 for Saturday etc  (or whatever day you are transcribing)

This is just in case you have a mishap, or PC failure for example..
You can then back up, to a choice of  3 days...
You close at the end of the day and back up on floppy.
The program will save it to your Hard drive as well.
The next time you go on you just open the program, and click on ' live'  and carry on  transcribing.
With luck you should  never need the back up.

And,  NO you can't change anything after you have saved the household, (that's down to  the checker)

Occupation and Employer, Employed or Unemployed  for those using INCENS

There appears to be a small problem on INCENS when coming to input the data from the Census Transcription Fiche for columns 11, 12, 13, & 14

11 = Occupation

12 = Employer   = (Em'er)

13 = Employed   =   (Em'ee)

14 = Neither Employer or Employed.. i.e. Unemployed  =  (Notem)

When you TAB down to the Occupation Box when inputting your Data from the fiche to INCENS,
you have a choice of typing in the occupation or you can press the Page Down button on your keyboard.
This will bring you up a list of Occupations, choose the one you want and click on OK.
You will now be back on the input page. Your cursor will be still in the occupation BOX  just after the occupation you have just chosen.
Without moving your CURSOR,  look on your fiche and see if there is a X in either column      12, 13, or 14.

If there is,  you need to enter it into INCENS.  To do this follow these  instructions.
Press the F key (or PF key at top of your keyboard)  corresponding to where the X is.
X  in  column 12 press  F6
X  in  column 13 press  F7
X  in  column 14 press  F8
This will insert the correct data.
Press the TAB key to continue.
