Central Bearded Dragon - Pogona vitticeps

When people refer to the Bearded Dragon, they almost always mean the Central or Inland bearded dragon - Pogona vitticeps.

This is one of the most widely kept lizards in captivity. It is hardy, calm, full of personality, easy to look after and easy to breed in captivity.

In their natural habitat in Australia, these bearded dragons can be found in the areas of Queensland, New South Wales, and across South Australia, as far as the coast and Adelaide. Those from the North West seem to have naturally developed to be stockier and larger than those from the south. It is now illegal to export reptiles from Australia, but these lizards have bred so well in captivity that they are available worldwide.

Snout to Vent length is usually 6-7 inches, whilst total length including tail can be 16-20 inches.

Bearded Dragons have a pouch situated beneath their chin, when threatened or displaying mating behaviour, this pouch is inflated, and can turn dark or coloured. This is how they received the name, the "Bearded" Dragon.

Bearded Dragons are usually described as living 7 - 15 years in captivity. However, accurate studies have not really examined the full potential of the lifespan of this lizard.
