- forums & communities

It may be a big planet, but it needn't be lonely.

Below you will find a collection of travel-related discussion forums and online travel-writing communities.

If the sites below don't answer your question, then you've probably asked it wrong.

Have you tried asking an idiot?
If you know of a site which I have missed and which you think highly of, click submit a link - if it's as good as you say, I'll include it.

All links open in a new window. Sites marked are an idiot approved.
aboutmytravel "AboutMyTravel.Com hopes to provide a place for ordinary people to share their stories of extraordinary places!"

A compendium of travel stories submitted by ordinary travellers.

If you have a story of your own, why not submit it?
A simple and straightforward site. The only problem is that they haven't sorted out their "stories by category" page yet, so you'll have to work your way through the complete list, or search by keyword.

At the time of review there were over 150 different stories, and more are being added continually.

Google Travel Groups 15 Newsgroups for travellers, covering a variety of travel-related topics and world-regions. If you can't access the 'rec.travel' newsgroups via your news-reader or email program, you can access them all here.
Horizons Unlimited Resources, info, advice and anecdotes for Motorcycling travellers.

The site also hosts a Bulletin Board for anything related to bikes and travel.
Lots of advice, info and links geared mainly towards motorbike-travel, but still of interest and use to non-bikers.

Sahara Travel Forum Sahara-overland's travel forum provides the latest word on travelling anywhere around the Sahara.

The Sahara Travel forum is hosted by the Horizons Unlimited Bulletin Board - a forum geared towards travelling by motorcycle.
If you plan on visiting any Saharan countries, you should first check the main website for thorough accounts of travel in the area.

Once you've checked that, visit this forum to find out the latest developments (travel restrictions change constantly in the region).
The Thorn Tree This is the big one. You won't find a busier (or better) forum anywhere.

More branches, more posts and more answers than anyone else around.

Only registered users are allowed to post, but registering is free and easy, so what are you waiting for?
The Thorn Tree should be your first port of call for virtually any travel-related question you have. Chances are it's been answered many times over, so do a search before you post.

It's also one of the best designed forums. A large part of each question is displayed, not just a vague heading like 'I have a question'. The branches are sensibly organised and easy to navigate, and the content is sensibly and clearly displayed.

The site is often slow to load, so for searches, it's usually quicker and easier to go via an idiot abroad's toolbox (click the igloo at the top of the page.)

Worldsurface.com 'Worldsurface.com is an online travel magazine written by an international community of writers & photographers. We promote Sustainable Tourism and Fair Trade Travel for independent travellers.'

Stories, photos and live-diaries, with an emphasis on 'fair and sustainable' tourism, submitted by travellers.

All submissions are automatically entered into their current competition, with some cool trips to be won.
There are plenty of stories, diaries, reviews and photos to help you plan your own trip, or just to while away some time.

If you're looking for a specialist tour, the tripfinder profiles a wide variety of tours which are good for the local community, economy and environment.

Membership is free and allows you to post articles, vote in the competitions, post in the discussion areas, and be a part of a better world.
