This line of thought stems from my recently indulging
in pot. I hope this isn't just a stoner ramble, i'm
trying to pass a little more than that across.
The world of NOiZE these days is populated by a range
of different opinions, and 4 the most part, they are
opposed. It's quite obvious that the SXE scene and the
stoner scene have some very different things to say,
it's also obvious the Satanism again has a quite different
set of values to those of the other two cultures mentioned.
So where is the best life style to be found? Should
i even care? Some would say that you need not listen
and that, in the words of the Levelers "there's only
one way to go, and that's your own.........". But
for me, that is ignorance, Dr LaVey spent his whole
life on Satanism, to ignore that kind of experience
is pretty dumb. The straight edge scene clashes hard
with the views of the satanist, but you can't deny that
they both have a message worth listening to.
Then there's the NRSV approach, anyone familiar with
this band will no that this means No Redeeming Social
Value. The looser approach if you will. Just admit defeat,
stop caring and have fun. Great, but that way you don't
get anywhere in life. True enough, 'anywhere in life'
is very much open to interpretation.
There are then the real hard line attitudes in rock,
such as Fascism, which i in know way advocate, but you
have to admit to it's existence and appeal to the natural
xenophobe that exists in us all. People are frightened
of change and differences.
The more you look at the hard line attitudes in the
rock world, the more you question your own motives and
drives. As i said, i like to think of this as a positive
process of absorbing peoples ideas, and changing 4 the
better. However, it doesn't seem so positive sometimes. |
The point is, that any one of these life styles may
seem to be the cure to all ills in the right frame of
mind, so how do you go about setting your standards?
The more i write here the more i am compelled by the
line from that levelers tune, it seems the only answer,
as is usual with life is, there is no answer, don't
ask. Can you ever find a name for your standards, can
any group ever share them with you and behave naturally.
The reason i mentioned pot earlier is that that is a
reflection of me trying a new style, the fact that i'm
trying to give up meat at the moment perhaps shows me
striving for the comfort that a Straight Edger feels
with him / her-self. Yet the opposite satanic view tells
me to indulge in meat if i so wish, and that narcotics
cloud my judgement. Yet a stoner will tell me that nothing
matters and everything is cool. All compelling, but
a coexistence is impossible.
Perhaps what i am exploring is the natural balance,
these cultures seem to represent, restraint in different
areas and indulgence in others. The right measure of
each attitude, whilst seeming unbelievably hypocritical
may just be natural. After all, the hard liners seem
to be the minority, perhaps the preachers are the ones
forcing an unnatural state of being. In that respect,
the Satanists got it right, as they would advocate you
behaving naturally.
So, we are back where we began, the indecisive conclusion
i was attempting has come full circle and shown a bias
and satanic attitude.
Perhaps not conclusive, but makes 4 compelling thought.
