Subject: Escapism
I thought I might write a little about escapism. Why? Simply
because it's important. It's the only time you're really happy.
When you're at work, you're miserable. You don't want to be
working, be it physical or mental. You want to be away from
the troubles of life, in another world almost. So, you read
a book or you watch a film or you play on your computer ,or
as I do, build a new web based world and play guitar. You
can focus on task at these times, and you concentrate and
everything else is forgotten for a while. You do the thing
that interests you, or become engrossed in a make believe
world, and you can block out the hardships. Those who are
truly happy in their work are few and far between. If you
can go to work everyday and be on task and highly involved,
you are truly a fortunate person. I would like to here from
you, please write about your experience of work and I will
include it in the library. But I will maintain that, for most
of us, we don't find the work we we're made for. Perhaps we
should all work in the areas where we spend our free time?
But are there enough. I doubt it. There are always bad jobs
to do. Would we still enjoy our hobbies if we were always
doing them anyway? I think I could live with being on-line
24hrs a day and playing guitar whenever I felt like it. But
who knows. For example, some people play football. But there
are very few opportunities to get to the top in football.
It's not practical for them to do the thing they love and
they have to settle for less. I feel this is mostly the case.
Some people only enjoy some thing like being stoned. That
is a hopeless situation to be in. You can never hope to be
happy without turning to crime, if your only pleasure is mindless
self-indulgence. And I think there is plenty of evidence for
that. Drug barons for example? No offence intended if any
member is involved in such things. Remember you can add you
own opinion too! But I think it's fair. You have to want to
be involved in some thing constructive. One important method
of escapism which is badly underused is that where writing
is used for cathartic effect (like this). It helps a lot to
write about the thing that get to you and I hope all of my
members can learn that. This also means that it helps to read.
I hope you can read other's troubles and thoughts and think
"shit yeah! I hate it when that happens". I like to think
this is a valuable use of my time for that reason. Sheesh,
I'm getting all caring! I think drugs (alcohol included) are
Man's ultimate method of escapism. We all do it. "What's your
poison" has real meaning these days. Mine is alcohol, jacks
is too. Others have drugs of a harder type. It's all the same.
These aren't the best ways to escape though because you get
nothing back. Once or twice a week is enough. Misery is a
form of escapism. You feel better when you quit. You can curl
up and wish yourself dead and hope that it might all go away.
Misery is addictive too. It's easy to get used to falling
into misery whenever you find it hard or things don't work
out. You have to stand up and remember "I've still got my
CD's you bastards!" and take it all on. But giving up is undeniably
nice once in a while. Nuff said here I think. Further pieces
needed. Send to the usual place EarthWorm.
