This pistol case was commissioned for Andrew Grey, Winnie the Pooh illustrator.  This box was made to fit a flintlock pistol, it is a British Light Dragoon Pistol that saw service in one of the front-line regiments during the Napoleonic Wars, including the Battle Of Waterloo.  Manufactured around 1804 by the Tower Of London Armoury.

The carcase of the box is made from Birchwood Ply, veneered with Maccasar Ebony with edge bandings and fittings from  what is believed to be black walnut and lined with aromatic Cedar.  The padding is made from antiqued velvet.  The box measures 420mm x 200mm x 100mm to hold the pistol comfortably.

 

Maccasar ebony comes from the Maccasar island in Indonesia, it is not the totally black ebony (Gabon Ebony) which comes from Africa, sometimes known as Coromandel, this Ebony veneer has a characteristic black and brown streaking.  The black walnut was reclaimed in the 1960's from the demolition of an Art Deco building.
