How to build a connector for GARMIN GPS devices for less than $1.00

Disclaimer: The instructions below are provided for your information only. If you build and/or use such a connector you do it at your own risk.

IN NO EVENT UNLESS REQUIRED BY APPLICABLE LAW OR AGREED TO IN WRITING WILL I BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR DAMAGES, INCLUDING ANY GENERAL, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE THE CONNECTOR (INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOSS OF DATA OR DATA BEING RENDERED INACCURATE OR LOSSES SUSTAINED BY YOU OR THIRD PARTIES OR A FAILURE OF THE CONNECTOR TO OPERATE WITH ANY DEVICES OR PROGRAMS), EVEN IF I HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

What you need...

  • DIN 45327 connector, female ($0.80)
  • some plastic pipe, inner diameter 10.5mm, outer diameter 12mm (max. $0.05)
  • some Super Glue ($0.10)

  • sharp knife
  • hacksaw
  • pliers

How to do it...

That's what a DIN 45327 connector looks like...
Remove the central contact (use the pliers to twist the contact and push it through the connector).

If your GPS has a post in the center of the socket, you might need to drill a bigger hole where the contact was. Most newer devices won't need this.

Cut back the plastic cover to the level of the metal clip if necessary. Some connectors are already in this form, others have a cover that extends right to the end of the (assembled) connector.

If the metal clip has a contact attached to connect to its male counterpart, remove it.

Cut off about 1cm of plastic pipe (hacksaw).
Trimm the edge one side of the pipe.
Cut straight through the pipe with a sharp knife. Don't cut anything off.
Put the metal clips and the connector together.
Slightly expand the plastic pipe and fit it onto the connector. As the pipe was smaller than the connector a gap will appear. Align the gap with one of the notches of the connector. Fix with Super Glue.
Trimm edges.
Done...

If the cover comes loose easily, fix it with Super Glue after attaching the cable.
