Fez

Fez (Fes) is the old capital of Morocco.  The New Town (i.e. the bit built by the French is OK but bland.  The Medina (or old town), in contrast is a warren of narrow streets and alleys.  It would have been nice to explore alone - but the 'guides' and their touts are everywhere and the hassle factor is much less if you let one of them accompany you.

In Fez I picked up an unofficial local guide.  Initially, until he got the picture of how it was going to be, he tried to rush around the place in a taxi.  After a short while he realised we were going to explore the Medina (old town) on foot!

017_13A.JPG (742800 bytes) This is a Madrasa - a Koranic School, beautifully set out round a central courtyard.
