FezFez (Fes) is the old capital of Morocco. The New Town (i.e. the bit built by the French is OK but bland. The Medina (or old town), in contrast is a warren of narrow streets and alleys. It would have been nice to explore alone - but the 'guides' and their touts are everywhere and the hassle factor is much less if you let one of them accompany you. In Fez I picked up an unofficial local guide. Initially, until he got the picture of how it was going to be, he tried to rush around the place in a taxi. After a short while he realised we were going to explore the Medina (old town) on foot!
