Being a representative can often feel like a thankless task.

It can be hard work at times but having fellow reps and committee members there for help and support as well as increased confidence and knowledge achieved through training makes being a UNISON representative a satisfying role.

So, have you got what it takes to be a UNISON representative?

Ask yourself the following questions and see…

These are just a few of the qualities needed by a UNISON representative in order to fulfill their role and if you answered YES to any of the above then you have the makings of a first-class UNISON representative. With full training from a vast array of subjects and
a good branch support network, being a UNISON representative can be a very rewarding position to hold.

It is important that ALL localities, if not every department, have their own representative or workplace "link" so that there is a familiar face for staff to turn to with any issues that they may have. Likewise, the locality or station-based representative will have the advantage of "local knowledge" when it comes to dealing with any problems.

If you think you could be a representative / workplace "link" for one of the areas listed below then please contact us now.

VACANCIES

Below are the localities or departments that are, at present, without their own representatives or links. Bedford and WGC are not included as they have steward and H&S representation already. Welwyn has representation for all it’s stations. Bedford has two representatives, both based at Ampthill and covering the locality until representatives can be appointed for it’s other stations.

The decision to advertise for a manager’s representative was following a suggestion from one of our members who also happened to be a station manager. It was felt that if managers had their own representative then they would have the added advantage of having first-hand knowledge of management issues which until recently would not have been the case. However we do now have a few representatives who are also Supervisors which may help with a better understanding of the role.

It must be said though that any member unhappy about being represented by their own representative is entitled to request a replacement. If this situation occurs then please contact either the Branch Secretary or Chairperson to discuss this and another representative will be approached to take on your case.

SELF-ORGANISED GROUPS

Self-organised groups form part of the branch committee and exist to promote opportunities to organise activities for the following groups:

Having self-organised groups with representatives allows their members to meet, discuss and share concerns. It also allows for establishment of priorities. At present this branch does not have either Self-Organised Groups or associated representatives.

We would welcome any interest from members who would like to set up their own group within the branch. This will give members the opportunity to meet and discuss topical issues with other members who may have experienced similar problems or issues but have not felt able to approach the committee or find the right balance with the branch.

Please contact the branch secretary if you are interested in setting up a self-organised group and she will help you with any information you may require to assist in the development of the group.
