Searching
- Locate
search engines by typing URL - e.g. www.lycos.co.uk - or by
clicking on a link from a listing, e.g. HERO
- Find
a search engine which best
meets your needs:
- Directories categorise
sites under headings, e.g. Yahoo!
- Indexes find all pages
which contain your search terms.
- Some engines can be restricted to search only
UK-based sites, e.g. Google UK
- Children should never be allowed to carry out
unsupervised Web searches. Although
directories aimed at children (e.g. Yahooligans) should only
give access to suitable sites, it is wise to approach all Web searching
with caution.
- To
find fewer, but more relevant Web pages on a subject, use Advanced Search
features -
- Use of AND, OR, NOT - learn how to do a Boolean search;
- Use quotes to find an "exact phrase" on a Web
page;
- Use + between words to find adjacent words on
a page;
- Some search pages allow the user to search for
pictures or sounds, e.g. Lycos Search
Options or Google Image
Search.
