Usui ReikiThe healing system we know as Reiki originated in Ancient Tibet, probably as long as 2500 years ago. It was re-discovered in the early 20th century by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese scholar and holy man. Out of an interest in the methods of Jesus, Buddha and other great healers, Dr. Usui searched all the known writings : Christian, Japanese and Chinese, to find out how healing occurred. He studied the ancient formulas and symbols of Tibet and found a formula in Sanskrit for healing. However, neither he nor anyone else could actually perform the healings described in the formula. In the early 1900's Dr. Usui went to the Kurama temple situated on a mountain top near Kyoto, Japan to seek a spiritual answer to this problem. He stayed in solitude and fasted for 21 days, but nothing happened until the morning of the last day when he received a spiritual awakening. It is said that he received four Sanskrit symbols and on his way down the mountain he was able to carry out three healings on himself using these symbols. On his return to Tokyo, after a period of healing poor people in Kyoto, Usui created his healing system and spent the rest of his life practicing and teaching Reiki.
