GARY WARDLOW (Dunmurry)
By Tony McGEE (4th March 2008)
Gary Wardlow turned in another sparkling performance at Ardglass to win the Ping Ulster Golfers' Alliance outing.
Whether it's the Ping Ulster Golfers' Alliance or the Ping Grand Prix, Gary Wardlow is in form just now and today he scorched over the Ardglass track in a super 66, five-under-par, to top the leaderboard in an UGA outing.
Dunmurry attaché Wardlow had a clean card as he never dropped a shot and he highlighted his round with a rare eagle two at the 12th hole where he drove just 40 yards short of the green and chipped in.
The winner had covered the front nine holes in one-under-par 34 with a birdie four at the fifth and regulation scores at the other eight holes.
After his eagle landed at 12, birdies flew at the long 14th and the par four 18th where, again, he drove close to the green.
Niall Gallagher, a 14 handicapper from The Hilton, topped the amateurs' nett leaderboard on 43 points while Banbridge international Rory Leonard took the gross prize on 38.
It was a home victory in the team event as local assistant Paul Vaughan and amateurs Andrew Smyth (11), Maurice Conlon (12) and Paul O'Prey (14) posted a winning 99 points. Conlon and O'Prey each carded 40 points.
The next Alliance outing will be at Portstewart on March 18 but on March 10 the pros will go it alone in another Grand Prix round at Royal County Down.
