Essex Alexander School  65 Norfolk Road

 E. A. S. Students having tea break in the back garden.

Basic aim of the three year course

To train students to become adequate teachers of the F. M. Alexander Technique. The main thing that happens to students in this is that they undergo change. By change we mean the whole self - physical mental, emotional, psychological, and spiritual. When this happens they need a secure, supportive, and encouraging environment to help them stick to basic Alexander principles.

Candidates for admission must be of good health, character and education, and prior instruction in the Technique on the basis of individual lessons is presumed. The course will be conducted in English, and so a good grasp of the language is assumed. Terms fees of £1,200 payable in the first week of each term, initial deposit £100 (non-returnable) this amount will be deducted from the last terms fee.
The Essex Alexander School is a small training course of not more than 10 students. We are therefore able to to monitor their progress closely, yet give them space to grow.  The structure of our syllabus is to follow FM's discoveries through a sequential pattern so that the students can build on a firm foundation which will stand them in good stead for later work. Students are encouraged to learn slowly to practice 'inhibition', have patience with their progress, and refrain from putting 'hands on' others too soon. A strong emphasis is therefore placed on a well thought out 'means whereby' approach to all aspects of the course, constantly requesting students to heighten their sense of awareness, to use their eyes, become more observant, and 'to think on their feet'. As students have preferred ways of learning we endeavour to meet their needs by covering the main Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic approaches. We also appreciate the value of question and answers. students are encouraged to question throughout their training, as this helps to eliminate misunderstanding and confusion. Because the atmosphere which we create is friendly and supportive, no one is fearful, or apprehensive about questioning.
