WILLOW
June 2000 - 27 May 2009

Willow was the softest, sweetest, most loving little girl ferret that anyone could have hoped for. Passed over to ferret heaven to now play and bounce with Merlin, Tilbury and Casper (and Bailey) her best friends.

Such a little fighter, she endured, survived and overcame adrenal disease only to develop a mystery breathing disorder. She was a little fighter inbetween and was always a happy little ray of light.

Willow was our original ferret, chosen along with Merlin and outlived her cage mates. Willow chose us at the ferret rescue - everytime I went to pick up another ferret to have a look somehow each 'new' ferret turned out to be Willow. When we walked away she even managed to work out how to climb out of the pen to try and follow us. How could we ignore this - so she came home with us and have been our sweet little girl for such a long time. We are missing you.

CASPER
August 2001 - 12 February 2008

It's a sad day because Casper who was part of our original group was pts. He'd become so frail due to progressive kidney failure that this was the kindest thing to do, but it leaves Willow and Bingo on their own.

Bingo really enjoyed Caspers company and we called them the 'Beano boys' as they were always together. In fact, a long time ago now, Willow chose Casper from a rescue centre.

Each ferret has its own story to tell. Casper was taken in by a rescue centre when they were tipped off that someone had a hutch full of ferrets which they had just stopped feeding cos they couldn't be bothered with them. He was a starvation case and has always been a little gangly slim guy - he never forgot being so hungary and he was always first to get his dinner. Unfortunately, I learnt thru several experiences that a bad early start often leads to an early demise. Nonetheless, he was a happy, wired little soul and has been part of lives for about 6.5 years and is one of the apples of my husbands eye. He always loves those that aren't so obviously loveable.

Bailey would beg by looking imploringly at you.

BAILEY
August 2002 - 5 July 2006

Having only just lost Tilbury, we have lost my baby Bailey. He was a rescue from Dave Dodds who was saved from neglection. When we first got him he was a nasty biter but turned into a soft cuddley ferret who bonded with me - he loved being rested in my arms and having his chest rubbed. He was my special 'teddy' Sandy ferret and so beautiful - his fur was so thick. He would beg for 'fishy treats' by standing by our ankles and staring imploring at us.

He had his share of health probems, but over this last year he had been doin great, got his bounce back and had great fun running up and down our stairs chasing the others. We would also find him sleeping on our flotaki rug in our bedroom all curled up. One of his fav. spots.

We got back from holiday last week and noticed his breathing was a little heavy but put it down to the hot weather. Then over the last 2 days his breathing became really laboured. We took him to the vets yesterday, who ran tests and unfortunately, we found he had a lymphoma that filled his chest and lungs and was pts.

He was only 6 years old. Tilbury was only 7. I don't think I can get any more adult rescue ferrets with an unknown and checkered past. Losing him is so painful.

You can read Bailey's story here. From when I first adopted him to when he passed.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss :( I too have lost a few ferrets this year and it's very painful when they go. Rum was 2 years put to sleep had cancer in April I had had her since she was 8 weeks old. Fudge was pts last month she had complications due to pyometra and vet couldn't complete the spay :( She was around 6 at the time and I had had her 5 years. Then there was Chocolate who died in May she had query pyometra? unsure about that but had signs of prolonged season in the end even though she had been mated to a hoblet. She would have been around 4 off the top of my head. I had her in 2002 and she was around 8/9 weeks and was a rescue case. Last year I lost my fave jill Podo, Fudge's sister and she was found dead in the run no explanation and no nothing.
So I know exactly how you feel and it's awful :(
Personally when I have had pets that have been terminal or they would not have had quality of life after treatment -as some of them can be pretty harsh -then I would rather put them to sleep to end rather than prolong their suffering.
No matter what age you have a pet from whether from a kit, pup or youngster or an older animal having a second chance in life it never gets any easier when you lose them no matter how long you had them.
I really feel for you and hope in time you can get over your loss. x deepest sympathies

So sorry to hear that Bailey has left you and crossed the bridge. Its so sad when they go, we have had Fitz (lymphoma) and Toby (Insulinoma) pass this year as well so I can sympathise completely.
I actually take great comfort in giving less fortunate ferrets a loving, safe and good home for however long they are with us, if they are destined to become ill earlier than they should do then I will deal with that and give them the best, as you have done with Bailey and Tilbury, as we all do, I think that's probably the best gift you can give any of them.
Bailey had such a good and loving home with you, he maybe wouldn't have fared better if he hadn't of come into your life, You did a good thing and should be proud and you have a lot to offer more rescue ferrets that need your love. And of course kits with a long lineage if that's what you decide.

I have a butterscotch called 'baylea' too. He and his brother and sister are just over a year old now,as with everyone else here my thoughts are with you and everyone else who has lost a little fuzz recently. Everyone was very supportive to me recently as well,it's good to have friends with the same sentimentalities.I,m so glad I found this group.....Furry Angels and Louises are very nice too.

TILBURY
9 April 2002 - 8 June 2006

We got Tilbury from the Essex Ferret Welfare in April 2002. He had been found in Tilbury Docks inside a rubbish dumpster. The rehoming lady urged us to take him as the other ferrets didn't seem to like him. With a story like that we had to give him a home. We were told he was about 2, but it is possible he could have been a little older.

He came to us rather overweight and out-condition - living on rubbish can do that to one. Anyhow with care and love and the proper food he became a very sleek and sexy ferret who looked like he was wearing a tuxedo.

He was always a friendly ferret once he learned that humans can be fun and so can other ferrets. He was quite protective of Willow and they were good friends.

Due to his diet of rubbish he always had problems with his digestion which took constant care and a carefully controlled diet to keep under-control. And because of this extra care he needed we had a special bond with him.

Over this year his condition slowly deteriorated, until we felt his time to go to spirit had come. We will miss our gentle friend. He was about 7 years old.

CONDOLENCES FROM FRIENDLY FERRET UK

Tilbury passed onto the bridge yesterday . He was a brave star who had suffered from IBD since we got him. He'd been found in Tilbury docks in a rubbish dumpster and was alway a proficient scavenger...slugs beware!!! Anyhow, his condition deteriorated over the last few months and yesterday we made that very hard decision.

This is him a couple of years ago looking sleek and sexy.

I'm so very Sorry to hear of Tilburys passing ... He was certainly a very handsome boy !....He was also a very lucky boy to have had you as his owners after such bad start in life and I;m sure he knew he was very much loved and was Happy Fuzzie ....It is soo awful having to make 'that' decision but it is done out of Love and he now suffers no more and will be dooking and dancing in the Summerlands over Rainbow Bridge.

It really is the hardest decision in the world - but also the bravest, most caring thing you can do. We have all been there I'm sure and although it brakes your heart it shows how very much you love your fuzzies. Thinking of you.

Tilbury has had many happy days and weeks since he came into your life and i am sure he thanks you for them all . Its not an easy decision to make as many of us know, dont question it because like the rest of us if there had been a better option you would have taken it . Tilbury knew you loved him thats what matters - Dook Dook Tilbury you will be remembered

Thank you for all the kind messages - it really soothes the soul to know that other know and understand how me and my husband feel. I read some of these message whilst at work and I ended up red eyed and sniffling at my desk - they were so touching. He always required a lot of care because of his condition so we were really close and he seemed understand english...it was really uncanny - you could ask him to do things and he would! (except poo in hte right place). He would follow my husband all over the house just a like a dog.

Oh Angela I am so sorry to hear about Tilbury, he was a very special boy. What a lucky ferret he was the day you found him, I know you have struggled with his IBD for a long time and kept him as healthy as you could. He wouldn't have had such a good, long and happy life without you. Its the hardest decision any of us have to make, but also being able to end a loved ones suffering is a gift too. It always breaks our hearts but that pain is a reflection of our love. I am so sorry you are going through this, please remember the good times and Tilbury will never be far away.
