Again a very long time since I added an entry...blame Facebook!!! It's so much easier to add photos there. So what's news? Over the last year and the last entry and the new beanies have been settling down with each other and us. I know you think this has already happened, but I really think it takes quite a few months for them to feel 'really' settled. This is especially noticeable with Sam - at first although very happy to be living with us - you know he's really part of the family when he almost looks like he's chuckling, when he no longer is frantic to get to food (obviously starved in the past) and he just seems so much more trusting of us, happy and playful. Over winter, we turned into a squidgy little dumpling, but with summer now although still squidgy, he's extremely active - in fact all the beanie group are very active and very wriggly. Did we solve the nipping problem - no not really. Harry has given us some very hard nips - I'm wondering if it's his implant wearing off - it's been 19 months now, but there's no other physical signs - so we'll just keep an eye out for return to whole hob status. I've brought a carry case indoors to put him in a timeout if he bites us hard again - I think it's working as so far he's being good. A firm 'no' and pushing him away seems to be working. The biggest news is that over the weekend we added an extra run to the beanie home. The beanies are all about 2 years old and incredibly active - Harry and Mitsy just can't be still - so I figured they need more stimulation - hence the new run. It's removeable from their home and as it sits on our patio we can fill it with a rotating set of toys - paddling pool, balls, dig box, tubes etc. And so far, it's gone down a treat. I like that we can give them access and then lock it off - it means that they have something to look forward to and don't get bored with it. So I suppose you want to see photos...here they are! And if you think it's not fair that Hershey, Mojo and Tsuki haven't got the run....they get playtime in their too. When the beanies come indoors in the morning, we often swap the Mojo group into the beanies side and also as it can be separate they can have playtime there too. 27 October 2010
Haven't put an entry in for a long time. Tony's been busy taking photos which I have uploaded to my Facebook page - he's really getting very good at taking photos of fast, wriggly ferrets! Over the summer, all our ferrets have been having a good time - either settling in well - for the beanies or just being happy - for the Mojo group. We've all had a good summer. The only downside is that the beanie group is...mad...quite utterly mad. I've found that I really don't enjoy being in a room with them running around me as I end up being terrorised, nipped and assulted. Yes, assulted by ferrets. I've got over 10 years experience of handling ferrets, but nothing has prepared me for a bunch of nutty 1 year old beanies and a poley mitt. It's like having dumb, dumb, dumb and dumber around - no amount of correction seems to work. So we've let them run in the house without me, but Tony has managed to teach them not to nip his bare feet but they still have a sock/ankle fetish. Anyhow, enoughs enough. They need to be taught manners - so I'm going to have the beanies inside in pairs and not the pairs they prefer! And so far that combination seems to helping their behaviour immensly - like they don't have the whole gang around so they're not so bolshy. I let you know how it progresses. Tony also has noticed that someone in the beanie group was just randomly poohing anywhere rather than using the pan in their court/cage, and at the weekend we finally found the culprit - Max! So we had words!!! We decided upon a drastic course of action. The beanies are 4 one year olds with lots of puppy fat and thick kit coats. The Mojo group, is about 5 years old now - middle aged for ferrets, and in particular Hershey hasn't grown his winter coat in or put any winter weight on. We are a little worried as last winter we felt he didn't do too well - he's not the most robust ferret and they sleep only a hutch albeit with lots of bedding. The beanie group has inherited the brick shed to sleep in which also can be heated - so at the weekend, Tony switched the groups to live in each others sides. Just as well as a couple of days this week the temperature went down to freezing. I think the change has been really appreciated by Tsuki and Hershey - they look so much happier. Now the beanies....seem to have adapted well too. We were a bit worried that they would be cold, but they seem very well. We've also closed off the bottom runs temporarily - in order to make sure that they poohed in the right areas. The first evening we caught Max about to pooh randomly, but we made a mad dash shouting, "NOOOOO!" and Tony managed to pick him up and plop (sic) him in the pan and so far no further accidents. We'll do a thorough inspection at the weekend. So both ferret sets seem to be settling down well. 15 August 2010
Beanies all had a bath yesterday. Max and Sam had an initial bath when we first got them from the rescue centre as they were quite grubby, but I noticed Max was still pretty grubby and needed a bath for a while now. So yesterday was the day. The water was black! So Sam got a bath...ditto...black water...and then we did Mitsy and Harry just because. So all our beanies are glistening white and fluffy now and smell and feel much better. Daz white. 24 July 2010
So finally managed to get some photos. I just love my beanie group. When waiting for dinner or to come in and play all 3 beanies sit in a bucket hammock with their heads all poking out - it's so difficult to tell where one starts and another ends. Max has put so much condition on that at times it's difficult to tell him apart from Harry. Anyhow, enough of my blather and on to the photos. Click this link for photos. 10 July 2010
It's so much fun watching the beanie group play together. Mitsy now joins in the fun and chases and wrestles with Sam and Max and Max likes to chase Harry. Harry still tries, but not so much now, to drag Sam off behind the futon, but Sam has grown (tubby) and tries to drag Harry off too...maybe one day he'll do it, but at the moment Harry probably weighs three times as much. I've been trying to get Tony to take photos of Max and Sam as they look like different ferrets. One thing we noticed was that Harry started biting down hard on Tony - everytime I picked him up to correct his biting - he was as good as gold with me. Then today it twigged - Harry was trying to drag Tony behind the futon!!! LOL. As much as that was a funny concept - Tony put Harry on the ground still attached to his arm and he promptly tried running off with it - but we will have to try and stop that. Problem is...Harry really isn't the brightest ferret going - all braun and no brains. 17 June 2010
Well, we've been on holiday and come back, I've had glandular fever and felt really rubbish, and the ferrets were kept in comfort whilst we were away by our petsitters. When we got back from holiday they were really happy to see us and of course, wanted out! But they're much better for being kept at home - especially the beanie group who have only just settled. Yesterday, the whole beanie group went to see a new vet. I phoned around lots of vets trying to find a new one. Our current vets are both about 40 minutes drive away and one is around the M25 which can obviously be tricky at the best of times. This new vet is up the road from us - so about 20 -25 minutes without any traffic. This vet actually has her own ferrets and seemed very down to earth and matter of fact - so it's good to have a choice. They were all booked in for their distemper vaccinations. I have been a bit worried about having these done as I kept on reading reports where ferrets had reactions and I also remember that Hershey had a reaction to Vanguard distemper vax. So I have been phoning around vets to find 1) what vaccine they use for ferrets and is it safe, 2) will they only use half a vial and 3) don't rip me off money-wise! The preferred vax for ferrets is Nobivac but the few vets that I found that used this wanted to use a whole vial which is just unnecessary (re. Fox MD on ferrets) - however this new vet uses a vax called Procyon and half a vial. Max needed a bit more attention - he needed a microchip, he also had torn a toenail which was getting infected so needed an antibiotic shot and then his vaccine. He wriggled lots with his toe - it must have been very sore and squeeked with the microchip - but I would too if you saw the size of the needle! All in all he was very good and no-one bit the vet or the assistant! Mitsy of course, kicked up a right fuzz and even pooed on the vet - just for a tiny injection. They all seemed ok afterwards and they slept the whole afternoon, they seemed ok in the evening, but seemed a little off their food - well, all except Sam! This morning everyone right as rain again. Tony will have to take some new photos of the beanie group as Sam and Max look really good now - although Sam is now somewhat podgey. 22 May 2010
So our guys have been together for a whole week - they're so settled that it's like they've been together for months! Harry keeps dragging Sam (the littlest off) - he used to do that with my slipper but I don't let him and he's substituted Sam, poor Sam. Harry does seem a little bemused at all the company now and doesn't quite know what to do it seems. Sam is now a little porker - he just eats and eats and being so little he's starting to look round - he only has little legs!! He also spends a lot of time hissing which I can't work out why? Probably to stop people dragging him off - I think it's bravado! LOL Max (was Whizz) looks in such good condition now, at a quick glance you can now mistake him for Harry and he's so HAPPY at being here, bouncing off the walls and he's so much like Casper (a previous ferret of ours) that's it uncanny. He does have a bad habit of trying to mount everyone - I don't know if this is dominance or cos he was only recently castrated, but it's not done nastily or too much. I've noticed that Sam and Mitsy seem to go together and Max and Harry like each other, them Mitsy and Harry and then Sam and Max - so all making friends. Mitsy is starting to get the hang of friends and is starting to play a little with them. Strangely enough I've not really seen Harry play with the new boys properly yet. Harry used to follow Bingo everywhere and play/wrestle with him but I've not seen him to do this with the new boys yet - I suppose it's such a big change it may take a bit of time. I know he enjoys their company and all the beanies sleep together all the time - but during the day Mitsy likes her own space. My other group is really summer skinny and seem a bit put out still. I don't think they like change much or new faces. I think they're a little jealous!! 16 May 2010
WE'VE DONE IT! THEY'RE ALL TOGETHER!!! The group was settling down so nicely over the week that we had no doubts that we could put them together this weekend to live. So we let them all out to play in the dining room on Sat. morning and Tony made some adjustments to their homes - opened up the trap door and put the ramp back so there was access from top to bottom - changed some hammocks and tidied up the cage. By this point all the beanie group was tired and wanted back anyway - so we popped them all back and they all settled down immediately in the sleep area. Well, apart from Whizz who felt it needed the addition of straw! A little later, Mitsy came back out and had a look on her face saying "Yeah, so when are you going to take them back out? eh?" Fortunately, they're here to stay. LOL. When we first got Sam 2 weeks ago, he was undeniably little, but I've never seen such a little ferret eat and poo so much!!! He's really filled out and looks normal ferret shape, albeit with a short tail and not much bigger than Mitsy! 13 May 2010
Yay...it's my birthday!! Tony drew me a special card featuring our new beanie group - it was so sweet! Well, a lot happens in a week. The boys all seem to be getting along well and infact, Harry looks really upset when we put them back separately. As things have been going so well, this week we added Mitsy into the group, and surprisingly she's been very good. Whizz has started to stand up for himself more and no doubt has learnt not to give Mitsy the advantage. Maybe cos he's settled in more he feels more confident, maybe Mitsy is confused by so many white ferrets!! LOL. Fizz...who we've renamed back to Sam (it just got too confusing) being the littlest does unfortunately, get quite a lot stick from the others. Harry likes to drag him off (I think Harry thinks he's a slipper), Whizz likes to straddle him and Mitsy would pick a fight, but he does stick up for himself. Despite all this, all in all things have been very good and they are really starting to settle and even play together. I'm really starting to love this new group - they just seem to fit so well together - the beanies love each other and follow each other everywhere. Whizz is defo. a nutcase - and is so excited to be in a forever home and runs, plays and wrestles like mad. Sam is a little sweety - I think a couple more weeks and his full character will shine through - but he's so cute and also playful, but more steady. They're really helping me get over losing Bingo. I can't wait for them all to be living together. The new beanies are eating like horses and putting on condition - Whizz is looking very sleek - can't wait to see how Sam looks in a few weeks time. Last week, we took Harry to the vets as for a couple of weeks on and off his poos have been a bit loose - could be stress or a bug he picked up from the rescue - who knows. Anyhow, after a short course of antibiotics he's back to normal. 07 May 2010
Intros with the beanies are going well. The new ones are renamed Whizz and Fizz and they too have been settling in with each other this week and there's been a little argy bargy, but certainly nothing serious. We popped Harry into the mix later in the week and he seems happy with the new group - again has been dragging Fizz (the littlest one) off to hide him. Today, we've even put all Beanies back into Harry's home to sleep together and get further used to each. Unfortunately, this does mean that Mitsy has been put down the bottom of the court on her own, but then it's a good lesson that she can't get everything her own way. Managed to get a few photos of the new boys - it's a bit difficult as they're doing a lot of exploring and don't want to stay still. I felt inspired by our new boys to write a poem: Does someone really care? I've given a home to a ferret, His owners probably didn't care, Did they notice when he'd gone missing? He was found by a member of public, He looked up, his face was quite sweet. He was handed to a safe place, We were looking for a new friend, Now for the first time he feels really happy
Yesterday we went back to the rescue centre - they had a lot of ferrets needing homes and there were some really lovely poleys and quite a lot of beanies. We tried to do the introductions more systematically this time and it was far better...however...Mitsy the minx threw great big spanners into the works. She decided that pretty much she didn't like anyone! including some huge lovely soft poley hobs. She also picked the mother of all fights with a lovely poley jill which sparked off everyone else picking fights. So as a matter of elimating ferrets she obviously didn't like or that picked on her, we almost came back with just Whizz. However, at the last minute there were two albino hobs - a larger one and a small stubby one. I thought Whizz might be trying to pick a fight with the larger one so the rescue woman suggested we take home the stubby one. So Whizz now has a friend to play with until we try intros again. The little jill was happy to go back and settled right back in with her sister. We took the two new beanie boys home and there's been a little argy bargy - to be expected but so far they're ok with each other. We gave them a wash this morning and boy, were they mucky. We'll give them a few more days of settling in here and then try the intros again. This does mean that we've got a LOT of beanies now!!!! 01 May 2010
I've finally managed to start getting my head around the shock of Bingo passing away. I've had an awful time at work - completing a project in the half the time it should normally take - so I've been upset, in shock, tired, stressed, anxious and exhausted. But now the project is almost complete so I can now start putting my head in order. Yesterday, I managed to spend a little time with the news ones and see how they are settling in. Tony has been spending his time settling them in and Harry spent a fair bit of time dragging the new boy off, but that now seems to have settled. The new one tries to make him play but for the most part Harry isn't sure what to do and wanders off! The great oaf!! Mitsy is totally different and is a typical minxy jill and wants to fight and rag the new ones cos 'like what are they doing here'. She didn't see the point of new friends, but she is now coming around and the new albino one and her have bouts of playing and fighting. Unfortunately, it's very obvious that the little jill is just too tiny and timid to put up with Mitsy and so far if one has a go at a new ferret the other comes along to support the fight. So Tony is very upset because he's decided that she can't stay. We phoned the rescue lady and we're going over there tomorrow. She's still got her sister so they can go back in together and hopefully get a lovely home together - I didn't realise that Tony had split her from her sister - otherwise i wouldn't have taken her. I don't know if we'll get another or just try and settle the boy. We all have learnt many lessons from this experience....not to get new ferrets so soon without time to grieve, me not to go along with Tony just to please him and Tony to think of the ferrets and not just what he wants. It's been a hard 2 weeks. The good news is that we will keep the albino boy - he's so playful and once settled should make a great pal for Mitsy - we've named him GeeWhizz. I don't know if it will stick, but that's who he is at the mo. 22 April 2010
What have we done???? Well, Bingo passed away leaving an almighty big gap in our hearts and home. We had already planned that we had wanted to add to the group before he’d passed away – it was just a matter of when. Tony it seemed, believed taking the bull by the horns, and seemed desperate to try and fill the gap – I went along with him because I do believe that Mitsy and Harry should have extra friends to play with and I wanted him to be happy. So he phoned the ferret rescue centre and arranged to visit for Sunday evening. I wasn’t so sure and felt there was no real urgency, but Tony seemed desperate so we went along with Harry and Mitsy on Sunday. I always find the rescue centre somewhat overwhelming as there’s always so many ferrets and they get switched around and it becomes a bit confusing. There were a lot of lovely albino hobs but they had only just been castrated so we couldn’t really try them out. Some of the rescue jills just wanted to drag Harry off and fight him so they were out, others were in groups of 3 and that was too many take home. There were some others that didn’t seem to want to take a piece of Harry or Mitsy, but at the time they didn’t seem interested in each other at all either – but Tony seemed quite smitten by the tinest, stumpy poley mitt jill and she had been living with a tiny wirey albino hob. Problem was I realised that I didn’t particularly like any of the ones they were tried with and did suggest that we come back another week – it was all too much for me so soon after Bingo died. Tony was in ferret heaven and didn’t hear a word I said. So after a hour of chaos – it seemed like these two runty little ferrets were coming home with us. They certainly weren’t my choice or Harry and Mitsy’s choice. I couldn’t get the enthusiasm up. Tony had also chosen a jill that hadn’t been neutered which can make settling more of a problem. We got them all home and let them out to see how things would go, and the 2 new ones were so happy and bounced around. Harry and Mitsy initially played with them and then a bit later realised that they were in her space and she decided enough was enough and went for them. So the new ones were housed separately. I also realised how runty and possibly problematic these two new ones might be. After all the health problems with our first rescue ferrets – I just don’t want to go through that again – I certainly don’t want to go through the pain of losing them so early in life either. They just weren’t ferrets that I would normally have chosen – I felt no connection with them and nor did Harry or Mitsy. I feel like we’ve made the worst decision ever. Tony likes the unlovable ones and couldn’t see my problem – he seemed smitten. Monday – I had the worst day at work for a long time – everything suddenly seemed like too much for me to bear and I broke down and it was only then (like hitting Tony over the head with a sledgehammer) did he notice I was so upset and that “Houston...we have a problem!” Practically speaking we’ve got these new guys until next weekend – so all I can do is see how things go, see if me, Harry and Mitsy can get used to them in that time and make a decision sometime next week whether they stay or go. Maybe that’s too soon to see if the new ferrets will settle, but I’ve seen enough introductions to know the difference between ferrets that really like each other, to those that hate each other, to those that are initially indifferent and that might come around. I really don’t see why we should force Harry and Mitsy to like these ferrets if they don’t. I tried to make the effort and get to know the new ones last night. The albino hob has potential as a good playmate for Mitsy as he’s very lively and likes to play. I’m really not sure about the jill – I can see that she is quite cut and she’s inquisitive and personable (although a little nippy), but she’s so stumpy and little – I just don't think she'll be big enough to stand up to Mitsy and Harry! |
