"I get the feeling...um...thought...that
I should know you.....but..." Kylah interupted him. ***** It is never calm in Anhk-Morpork.
No big city is calm, and like all city people, the citizens of Anhk-Morpork
have a lot on their minds. For example, on this particularly cool evening
Modo the Gardener was wondering precisely which compost he should use
for Klatchian Roses, The Librarian was wondering where the strange grey
man had come from whom he had chased out of the University for fun, and
Angua Uberwald was wondering how she could silently assassinate Kylah
Stibbons without anyone noticing or suspecting it was her. She had wondered
about this particular point all the way from the watch-house, all the
way up to the University. So, this Vimes man wants to talk to her, does
he? Well, that is an unexpected twist to the tale. Something we had not
planned for. But it would pose little threat, if it went too far she could
easily dispose of this "Vimes". The hard part was over. Forcing oneself
into another person's mind was an extremely difficult task. Yes, granted
that she was elsewhere at the time but this Angua was a strong-willed
individual and had left much residual psionic resistance to her entry.
Back to the present, what was it she had to do now? Well, apart from the
elimination of Kylah Stibbons, she was going to have to make sure the
rest of her party had infiltrated their host minds and were ready to move.
Then it would be time for her and her counterparts to meet with their
employer and discuss wages. And the wages would be high. Being a Character
Assassin required more than a passing familiarity with telepathy. Character
Assassins were trained from childhood to become expertly crafted tools
to whoever had the motivation and, of course, the money to pay the Clan.
By this point, she had reached the University gates. All in good time
she thought and she allowed herself a tiny little flash of a smile. ***** Angua lay staring upwards at the
ceiling of her bedroom and thought about the events of late. Carrot had
acted as though nothing had happened between them and, understandably,
she wasn't too pleased. On the other hand, she was worried, when she mentioned
the fact that he had stabbed Ponder Stibbons (or rather when Kylah Stibbons
had demanded to know the justification for his unspeakable crime) he looked
at her with a puzzled expression. This had practically scared Angua to
death (on second thought, no, it didn't really, not much could scare her
to death at this point, given where she was) and she would have pressed
Carrot for more information if she had not began to feel slightly faint.
Carrot could wait and she had decided to return to her bedroom. Well,
it wasn't really her bedroom but Death had presented it to her as her
bedroom. |
