Sigmar's Open 2503

Blood Bowl has a long and well-established history in the Empire, and many of the best teams in the Old World hail from that realm. Perhaps more importantly, a great many tournaments are held there, and as well as the Majors like the Blood Bowl itself, there are many more Minors.

Although Sigmar's Open is far from the most lucrative of such events, what it lacks in prize money it makes up in attendance. Thousands upon thousands of devout pilgrims use this month in the holy calendar to spend time in activities that may not cleanse and purify the body and the soul, but are damn good fun all the same. The warrior priesthood, the Witch Hunters, and the nuns from the Sisters of Sigmar all take a break from their duties to join their flock in the crowds, and though it's rarely a team of openly Sigmarite persuasion that wins the tournament, the winners are always widely considered to be blessed by Him - otherwise He wouldn't have let them win!

This year it was the Ogre team the Redpeak Roosters who won, beating a Dwarf team in the final. Much as has been the case in previous years, the champions aren't followers of the Cult of Sigmar, mainly because the entirety of their mental capacity is given over towards consideration of violence and where the next meal is coming from. Higher spiritual thoughts rarely get a look in. The runners up, for their part, have lodged a complaint with the Tournament organisers that their opponents had too many players on the pitch throughout the match. Officials were mystified as to the reason for this complaint until the Dwarfs produced an official rulebook said to follow the ancient rules set down by Nuffle - yet with suspiciously wet ink - that said that any player more than twice the height of his counterpart in the other team counts as two players, under which ruling the Ogres counted as fielding 19 "players" in every drive...

The only negative from this tournament was the low number of teams that entered, for the second tournament running. League officials considered calling a halt to play, and only the provisional entry of a further four teams into the next tournament, the Dungeonbowl, rescued the League.
