From a position only a month before when I was contemplating cancelling the event due to lack of entries (owing to a mix up with the event being omitted from the BC calendar), I am happy to report that on the day, we had a record number of entries on the line (30) that resulted in a full field of 70 riders - in fact 72 started but don't tell British Cycling. My thanks must firstly go to all the club members, and members from other clubs, who pulled out the stops with emails, flyers and posters to various forums, people with contacts and potential riders in the days leading up to the event. Without this, the field may well have been no more than half the eventual number. We also had three Icknield riders: Andrew Paisley, Simon Thomson and Andrew knight - who galantly rode to finish.
I would also like to thank all the competitors who partook in the race, and those who EOL - it did cause our signing on officials some headaches, but I had nothing but praise from the riders regarding the way the event was run by the Icknield Road Club, so thank you to all the marshals and officials who helped on the day to make it a smooth running event. In particular, I would like to thank Alan Davies and Paul Abraham for helping with the signing on, Richard Noon for organising the marshals into position, Peter Tasker for badgering people into marshalling beforehand, Richard Gray, Gerald Eva, Roy Porter, Julie Marsden, Paul Abraham and anyone else I've missed for judging on the line and, not least, Steve Chapman for single handedly doing the catering and helping me clear up the hall afterwards. Our decision to run the race over the Cardington/Old Warden Circuit in Bedfordshire, due to concerns of the safety of the Stewkley/Cublington circuit of previous years, was clearly vindicated as there were no incidents to report!
I have posted below the result down to 15th position. For the full results, please see the Compomotive Summer Road Race 2008 Results. There were some 45 finishers, pretty good considering the wind! In keeping with tradition, the day proved dry and sunny, albeit the conditions were far from a walk in the park for the riders with extremely breezy conditions, almost gale like it seemed from where I was standing on the finish line. As such the field soon splintered with riders falling off the back in droves, and the finish hill resulted in a clear breakaway group of 14 after only half a lap. This contained the likes of Jack Adams (Loughborough Students Pedal Power), Mike Jackson (CC Luton), Flavio Zappi (Oxford university CC), Mike Wragg (Team MK) and Paul Londers (Team Mk) who maintained the group until the penultimate lap when Mike Jackson and Flavio Zappi made a break on the hill and from which Mike Jackson of CC Luton eventually prevailed as the overall winner by a good margin and in a time of approximately 3 hours. The chasing group was spread out over a further 1 or 2 minutes with the main bunch of some 22 a further minute or so behind.
Chasing group of 14 on the first lap comprising, inter alia, from L to R Jack
Adams, Flavio Zappi OUCC) (2nd), Mike Jackson (CC Luton) (1st),
Mike Wragg (Team MK) (3rd), Paul Londers (Team MK) (5th).

A big thank you to all the marshalls, officials and to Paul Thomson (Hemel Hempstead CC) and Trev Smith (Chief Commissaires), to Barry Gilzean and Robert Blackmore for driving lead cars, and to Keith Prime and Ray Morgan for manning the radios. Also to Richard Gray and everyone else who helped judge on the finish line.
If you have comments to improve the running of next year's event, please pass them on to Andy Parrish or Richard Noon.
WELL DONE TO EVERYONE THAT RODE
