Yet again, another successful road race with cooler conditions than forcast for which I should think many riders were thankful. Nevertheless, the pace was anything but cool, with the first two laps run off at a steady 30 mph as a 9 man break formed virtually from the gun. It pulled out an advantage of over 30 seconds by the middle of the second lap but was slowly pegged back to about 14 seconds by the time the bunch reached the hill the second time round and during the third lap the break was eventually absorbed by the bunch. From thereon, the pace cooled to a much more steady 20-25mph but for many the early pace proved too much as a number of riders found themselves blown out the back. During the third and fourth laps, various riders tested their legs but, other than Richard Wood (Team MK) who featured consistently in the top 5 across the line, nothing serious happened until the penultimate lap when a small break formed, from which the final winner, Joe Brayfield (awcycles.co.uk), was victorious.
Riders just glad to finish!
The following is a short synopsis of the final laps of the race as seen through the eyes of Neil Wass (Verulam CC). Many thanks for you contribution Neil.

"Our winning group formed early in the penultimate lap. I’m not good at remembering courses but I think we went through the village at the top of the hill (Cublington ed.) then down to a very sharp left at a T junction and it was up that drag where I broke away from the pack. I was actually intending just to do a turn to bring Richard Wood of Team MK back but I looked back, there was a gap and Chris Hurd (VC Lincoln - Mister mortgage - Listers Timber) was pursuing. Within another mile we were joined by an agiskoviner rider (Chris Burch - www.agiskoviner.com ed) and caught Richard. 3 or 4 miles later, Joe Bayfield (awcycles.co.uk) joined us and started putting in some useful turns as the pace upped slightly. Eventually, this seemed to be too much for (Chris) and we dropped him somewhere on the final lap.
On the final downhill before the finish there was a bit of hesitation in our group of four. I had a feeling I was the weakest and I was happy to take 4th so I kept going the best I could on the front but there was nothing left as the final rise started!"
