The year saw buoyant membership and success both in organisation and competition, but was tinged with sadness, with the death of our old friend Ron Willett in January and tragically, Karin Abraham at Christmas. Welcome new names appeared in the Club Championship Competitions. Dave Wright, our new Club Champion, finished the year strongly with a fine performance in the Open 12 and a narrow win over Ken Usher, with Nick Dann a creditable third. Stephen Morris gave us a new name on the Intermediate Championship and also the 100 Cup for
the fastest 100.
In an impressive year, Ken Usher rewrote Club tricycle records, including overall records at 15 miles and from 50 miles to 24 hours plus a fine array of additions to our list of outstanding past performances. The Veterans team of Ken, well-supported by John Lee, Gerry Ashley and Bob Lockett, gained several awards and had the novel distinction of featuring on Anglia TV.
Robert McGrady produced the fastest times from 10 to 50 miles, with new Veterans records at 10 and 25 miles, and was the fastest of eight sub-hour members at 25 miles, despite challenges from Simon OBrien and Roger Queen, and also led the Club team to win the Wilkinson Sword Trophy.
Auriel Forrester again provided memorable highlights with a new Masters Pursuit record and a successful defence of her UCI World Masters Pursuit Championship after a bruising crash on the track earlier in the week. Her 1998 Veterans hour distance was also recognised as a World record. At Club level, Auriel easily retained her Ladies Championship, but mention must be made of some very spirited rides by Kathy Morgan, particularly her Ladies Veterans Club record in the sub-Open 12 hour event.
Gareth Daniels rode consistently to retain the Junior Championship in great style, with a fine early season 10, three sub-hour rides and twelfth place in the National Junior BAR.
Katy and William Jarvis, Alexandra and Hayley Baines, Sean and Nicola Abraham, competed enthusiastically in the Mobil Challenge at Milton Keynes Bowl, keeping the Club colours well to the fore.
Road Race Champion Glenn OBrien again led the team in some good rides, with strong back up from Simon OBrien, whilst Andy Parrish was awarded the Alan Ettwell Cup for the best improvement in 1999.
Gordon Harts impressive efforts in organising the Open 12
and conjuring up time trial courses were recognised when he was again voted Clubman of the Year, whilst Vere Fraser was awarded the new Ron Wlllett Memorial Cup far his readiness to help.
Finaly, we welcome our new President Doug Eagger, with thanks to his predecessor, Frank White.
