Club runs are the mainstay of the club and are as diverse as the members of the club. We have club runs to suit all abilities, from the new cyclist turning their wheels for the first time to racy types who need 'to get the miles in'. Each run has a leader who chooses the route and controls the pace, working on the principle that 'the run is as fast as the slowest rider. The distances range from 10-15 miles with many stops through to 60-70 miles without stopping. The starting points are in Barton-le-Clay, outside the library or Houghton Regis in front of the church. The meeting time vary depending on the group and time of year. 9:00 am is the earliest start time and 9:30 pm the latest. These times are the departure times and riders should aim to be at the meeting point 10-15 minutes before. Helmets aren't compulsory but are a sensible precaution as is carrying spare innertubes or puncture repair equipment, and a pump. It is also a good idea to carry a water bottle and some sustainance such as a banana or gel bar.
There are a number of alternative runs that take place on Saturdays. Click on the runs link to the left for further details. As these runs are unofficial and thus not subject to some of the unspoken rules of the Sunday run, the pace is faster, stops are optional as is waiting for stragglers. It would be prudent to join the Sunday runs first to gauge your ability against the 'Saturday crew' who ride on the Sunday runs.
The club runs an evening Time Trial league from early April to mid August. The start times vary from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. depending on the time of year and event course. The league is split into age categories as well as an overall category. Both are based on a points system. Prizes are given at the end of the year to the winners of the various groups. Beginners are welcome to race (subject to certain conditions). The events cover distances of 7 (Circuit), 10, 14 (Circuit), 15 & 25 miles (see links on the left).
Nick Pitt crosses the line in the second club 10 of the 2006 season.
Beginners shouldn't be put off by the distance or by thinking your bike is
not good enough. The type of bike does not matter, MTB's and Hybrids are welcome as long as
they are roadworthy. The 7 and 14 mile courses are beginner friendly, being on quiet untrafficked
lanes.
We all started the same way. Yes, you will see exotic bikes. These normally belong to seasoned
racers.
Riding an exotic / expensive bike doesn't necessarily make them faster than you.. it's the
legs that matter!
Please contact Peter Jones for further
information or consult the Events Diary.
The Club meets in Silsoe Village Hall on Tuesdays at 7:30pm throughout the year. During the racing season (April-Aug) the clubroom opens earlier to allow the racers time to get ready for the evening's race. Visitors are welcome throughout the year. You don't have to race or be interested in racing to visit; the social side of the club is as important as racing. Click on the links to the left for further details.
The Club has two BC registered Coaches and runs Go-Ride coaching activities.
Please contact Barry Gilzean or
Richard Noon for further details.
The club also organises trips several times a year to the track at Newport and Manchester
Velodromes. Please contact John Lee
for details. See link on front page for details of training sessions at Welwyn track.
We work closely with local schools to deliver Go-Ride cycling activities following the British Cycling plan. Off road cycling activities and coaching for age 9-15 years take place on Saturdays at Icknield High School, Riddy Lane, Luton.
The Club is one of the main organisers in the London North District of the CTT for open time trials. It promotes five open events a year, including a 12 hour event at the beginning of September. In addition, the club promotes an open road race held under British Cycling rules in June of each year. Please consult the Events Diary and contact the relevant event secretaries for further information.
The club organises various events throughout the year. These include:-
These involve 2-3 days staying in a youth hostel, normally within 150 miles of Luton. Some members ride to the venue as a group while others drive, sometimes carrying the bags for the riding group. These weekends are purely social taken at a relaxed pace, with frequent stops, scenic routes, different ability groups and visiting pubs to reflect on the days riding all being part of the weekend. Please contact Paul Abraham for details of trips.
Peaks weekend July 2003 organised by Neil Allonby. A happy bunch we were until we met The Strines (a series of four ever steeper inclines reaching 1 in 6!)
Once a year the club goes 'country'. The venue is normally close to Luton and is great fun for all ages.
Also, once a year the club gets together around the barbecue. This gives the husbands and wives a chance to swap notes on how little they see the 'other half' because they are out on their bikes. Please contact Murial Holgate for further details.
During the year we have guest speakers visit the club, the speakers talk about various cycling subjects. These have in the past included Touring, Training, Equipment & health/diet etc.
The club arranges an informal Xmas lunch at the White Lion, Silsoe, Bedfordshire, one Sunday in December. Some members even ride-on to the pub from the morning club run! Please contact Ken Ayres for further information.
The Club holds its prize presentation in December each year when all the members and their wives and family come together for a formal dinner, to toast each other, and to receive their various prizes. There is usually a guest speaker and at the club's 70th anniversary do, we were honoured with David Duffield's presence. The evening finishes around the bar and the dance floor to the sound of music hosted by a DJ. The venue is usually at the Luton Sports and Social Club, Stockingstone Hill, Luton.
There is a very popular Xmas supper held at the clubroom each year the Tuesday before Christmas. This is a buffet affair when various prize monies won by racing members during the year are also awarded.
