Peterborough Area Radio Controlled Society

Induction for new members joining the SILENT FLIGHT section

A very warm welcome to the Silent Flight brigade generally known as the GLIDER GUIDERS

As a trainee pilot you will be attached to a registered model flying instructor who will not only teach you to fly but will guide you through the club rules to ensure you fully understand them and what is required of you to uphold them.  If there is anything you need explaining just ask as there will always be someone willing to explain/show you.  Better to ask first than make irretrievable mistakes particularly where safety is concerned.

Your instructor/s will make you familiar with local flying site rules concerning:

Flight boundaries, Restrictions, Obstacles, etc.

Safety operation rules and routines.

B.M.F.A. Code of practices contained in the B.M.F.A. members handbook which you will be issued a copy of.

If required, he will give you advice on the most suitable training model for trainees and for the flying site conditions. Also advice on building the aircraft structures to steer you through problems you may encounter whilst building your model, generally encouraging you to do the work correctly to ensure you finish with a soundly and safely constructed aircraft which will be predictable in flight and a joy to fly. Making your training much easier and more relaxing.  He will explain the 2 different modes for radio transmitters, (TX) and will suggest the mode you should use during your training. Generally this will be the mode he uses.

Teach — Explain:

  • Importance of TX control systems
  • TX and RX range checks
  • Switching ON — OFF routines

Will take you through check routines for your model:

  • Airframe construction and soundness
  • Control linkages and operation
  • Control surfaces and soundness of attachment
  • Control cables rods devices etc
  • Cockpit / Hatch securing attachment, Control surface settings and effects
  • RUDDER
  • ELEVATOR
  • AILERONS
  • C of G position
  • Wing and Tailplane attachments

In Plane radio gear:

  • Battery location and security
  • RX location and aerial run
  • Servos and their connections to RX
  • Output arms and devices (No excessive play),
  •  Launching Devices: -
  • Bungee types and make up
  • Anchorage (Importance of safety), Hand tow winches
  • Electric launch winches & turn round pulleys

As you can see, all the above is to ensure that you are taught to FLY POSITIVELY, CORRECTLY AND SAFELY.

Also that you are not endangering yourself or others and are aware of potential hazards. Enjoy your flying.
