On 28th December 2001, I went and saw a part built Banham Spyder Porsche 550 look-alike.

This is a picture of a finished one from a show.

It's based on a (don't laugh) Skoda 130, but all I have bought is the floor pan, engine and running gear. The rest is in the skip. Along with this, I have a rather nice set of glass fibre body panels.

Now it's been home for a couple of weeks and we have had major storms and general hideous weather.

Great.

So, the Fury is currently sitting outside getting wet while I do the major welding and body fitting work so the Spyder can live under a tarpaulin for a while.

That's the result of three weekend's work. Most of the work was rewelding the pigeon droppings that existed to make something I considered strong enough to be safe (thanks Paul). Also fitting raised turrets to mount the top seatbelt mount for SVA.

The body is now bonded and rivetted at the front, the sills will not be firmly fitted until the doors are properly hung so I can ensure the profile of the body matches that of the doors. The engine turns over, but no sparks. Electrics are "interesting" as although all original Skoda, they only have black, green, red, white, yellow and blue wires. For example I have so far discovered three different uses for blue in the instruments alone. One of these is ground, although the rest of the car seems to use yellow for ground. Groovy communist humor no doubt.

BIG update.............

September 2002 it passed it's SVA on the second attempt. I believe this to be the first Banham Spyder to do so.

Spent the next 5 months trying to spray the thing outdoors. There was an awful lot of shaping and filling to do. Finally got it to a point where it could be sprayed. Local chap Phil did all the work and I went to collect it yesterday (21/6/2003). What a result!

It's beautiful. Just need to reassemble the bits I took off (including the engine) and adapt the inlet manifold to use a 1 3/4 inch SU as the original carb was downdraft and let water in all the time.

New manifold now looks like this:

I took it to it's first show yesterday (20th July) and it does get you noticed. What a giggle to drive too. Handles like a dream and the performance and noises are very "period" I must say. Any more would spoil it in my opinion.
