10 Days In The USA, published by Out Of The Box. 2007. Box.
In shrink. £14. Desc. by Andy.
Designed by Alan R Moon, Aaron Weissblum.
No. players: 2-4. Country: American, Duration: 30 mins. Reworking of the
excellent Europa Tour. Players must try to build a valid route through the USA
using country cards, plane and car cards.
There are special card holders to ease play and a map board showing the
states of the USA so you can see which states are adjacent and which permitted
for plane travel. The game poses interesting puzzle-like challenges, and is one
I very much enjoy - highly recommended.

Special notes: Clear blue with numbers

This is a 17mm x 25mm 16 sided dice -
which in shape is an octagonal dipyramid. If that means nothing then imagine
two eight sided pyramids stuck together. The faces are numbered.
24 Sided Dice, published by Gamescience. . New. £2.75
Designer Unknown. Country: American, Desc.

Special notes: Clear purple, with numerals
highlighted in silver. There is a very slight blemish on one edge - should not
affect the way it rolls significantly.
This is a 20mm 24 sided dice - which in
shape is a tetrakis hexahedron. If that means nothing then imagine a cube but
with each side 'over-inflated' into 4 equal triangular faces. The faces are
numbered.
Adam & Eva, published by Ravensberger. 2004. Box. In shrink. £13

Neat two player game in which the players
take turns to offer two cards from their hand to their opponent, who must pick
one and let their opponent take the other.
The cards correspond to the colours of apples, and at the end of the
hand the player with the highest score gets the better apple but the other
player gets a consolation apple. Over
several hands apples are collected and at the end of the game are worth face
value, but with bonuses for complete sets of apples. A few special cards and wild cards add to the possibilities. Very neat little game with plently of
subtleties. Recommended.

Age Of Steam: Different Complex Tiles, published by Warfrog. ca.2004. Packet.
Good. £2
Designed by Martin Wallace. No. players:
3-6. Country: British, Duration: 2 hrs, Desc. by Andy.
A very small expansion - just 7 track
tiles each showing complex track layouts which could crop up, but for which
there are no tiles in the base game.
Clearly you will need the base game to make use of this. Not sure who made it, so I have defaulted to
Warfrog who made the original game.
American Civil War Wargaming, published by Airfix. 1977. Book. Good.

gives details of ACW army organisation, describes ACW tactics, and gives an
overview of The Peninsular Campaign of 1862. Finally the book also includes a
set of rules you can use to play out ACW Miniatures battles.
Amun-Re, published by Rio Grande Games. 2003. Box. Excellent.
£20
Designed by Reiner Knizia. No. players:
3-5. Country: American, Duration: 90 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Strategic game set in ancient Egypt. Players bid for areas of land in Upper and
Lower Egypt using a clever mechanism whereby all the regions available for sale
are bid for simultaneously, with outbid players having to reconsider what they
want. The various regions have differing numbers of spaces for farming, as well
as having different fixed incomes, numbers of temples, camels and other
benefits. Players also have to go to
make a temple visit where they can choose how much money to give to the gods or even to steal from the
temple. Doing this can get bonus actions, and also helps determine how good the
harvest is. Finally pyramids are built
to gain victory points. Highly
recommended.
Atlantic Star, published by Queen Games. ca.2002. Box. In shrink.
£24
Designed by Dirk Henn. No. players: 2-6.
Country: German, Duration: 1 hr, Desc. by Andy.
Excellent game previously published as
Show Manager but this time rethemed as putting together ocean cruises. Players must create four cruises during the
game, and to do this they need to hire suitable ships. However, these ships are almost all
specialist and can only perform one, two or at most three sections out of the
18 cruise sections needed. A clever
mechanism restricts the number and cost of ships available at any time and so
it soon becomes difficult to find just the ship you need before your must put
on a cruise. A very clever mechanism
which combines skill and luck very nicely and money is always tight. This is one of my favourite games - highly
recommended.
Attack!, published by Eagle Games. 2003. Box. In shrink. £11
Designed by Glenn Drover. No. players:
2-6. Country: American, Duration: 3 hrs, Desc. by Andy.
A fairly simple wargame set in the WW2
era. Players start with a few regions and a few units, and each expands their
power base by adding regions to their 'sphere of influence', either by
diplomatic or military means. The game covers land combat, sea combat, and also
has an economic production system which is card based. As well as a very large full colour board
the game includes 600+ plastic miniatures for the units!
Auf & Ab, published by Franjos. 2003. Box. New. £7
Designed by Ed Pegg. No. players: 3-4.
Country: German, Duration: 10 mins/hand, Desc. by Andy.
Card game which can (less easily) be
played with a set of 9 pip dominoes. This is a 'climbing game' which means that
cards are played in combinations, and other players can then play higher sets of
cards of the same combination. The objective is to get rid of your cards - thus
getting rid of your weak cards is key.
The twist in this game is that every card has two values, one red and
one blue. When one of several special
cards is played everyone turns their cards the other way up, and must now lay
lower combinations rather than higher ones.
A clever twist which means you have to keep your hand viable 'either way
up'. Recommended.
Auf Achse, published by F X Schmid. 1991. Box. Good, 2 corners
taped. £11
Designed by Wolfgang Kramer. No. players:
2-6. Country: German, Duration: 90 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Excellent route planning and delivery
game. Players drive their delivery trucks up and down Germany and neighbouring
countries, competing for contracts which come up at auction. Very nice lorries and goods to put on them.
I also have some house rules to reduce the luck of the dice used for movement,
which adds to the skill level quite a bit, making it a game I can highly
recommend.
Auf Achse Das Kartenspiel, published by FX Schmid. 1994. Box. Good.
£8
Designed by Wolfgang Kramer. No. players:
2-5. Country: German, Duration: 30 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Card game with a theme taken from the Auf
Acshe board game (delivering goods by truck around Europe). However, the game play is entirely
different, and actually rather good.
Players each play a speed card (10kmph - 120kmph) or a special card
simultaneously face down, as well as discarding a card each to a common
pile. The cards are then turned up and
added to that player's sequence. The
number of rounds before a hand ends depends on the cards discarded to the
common pool. The idea is to have a high scoring sequence when the round ends,
but if you were playing for a longer or shorter hand then you may well have
problems.
Austin Poker, published by Hangman Games. 2004. Box. New. £17
Designed by Alan D. Ernstein. No. players:
3-6. Country: American, Duration: 75 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Numbered 610/1000. Gambling game set in
the Old West. Each player gets their
own deck of poker cards, but the cards also have special abilities on them
which can be actioned. Players play four hands of 5 card stud simultaneously so
there is plenty of choice in how to play out your cards to best effect. Players also get to buy mines, ranches and
businesses, which can make extra money, but success at poker is what will get
you the big money. Limited edition game - 1000 were produced.
Backgammon, published by Golden Hands. 1974. Book. Good, Ex
Library, Laminated cover. £3.50
Designed by Walter Gibson. Country:
British, Desc. by Andy.
Hardback (laminated), 24x16cm, 144
pages. An excellent introduction to
Backgammon which starts by explaining the very basics ie. the rules and some
guidelines on what makes a good position and what makes a poor position, and
probabilities. The book then takes you through a sample game explaining why
moves were made. It then discusses
doubling, as well as good opening moves, and there is a study of different
types of game (running, blocking, and back games). Ideal if you want to find
out why Backgammon is more than just rolling dice!
Bang: Bullet Edition, published by DaVinci Games. 2007. Bullet
Case. In shrink. £22
Designed by Emiliano Sciarra. No. players:
3-8. Country: Italian, Duration: 30 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Card game which recreates a Wild West
shootout. Each player is dealt a
character card which gives them special abilities and a secret role card which
determines that player's goal for the game: the Sheriff wants to kill all
Outlaws, the deputy wants to protect the Sheriff and kill Outlaws, the Outlaws
want to kill the Sheriff, and the Renegade just wants to be the last person
standing. The cards let you shoot other
people (though sometimes a shot will miss), get a better gun, have a beer to
revive you etc. The cards are language independent. This set includes the Dodge
City, High Noon and Fistful of Cards expansions, 5 further new cards, and a
metal sheriff badge. It all comes in an impressive metal bullet shaped case.

McCool. No. players: 3-8. Country: British, Duration: 45 mins.
Card game of the same general type as Pit,
in which there are a series of rounds in which players all trade cards
simultaneously, until the sand timer runs out.
However there is a board as well and your position indicates which type
of card you are trying to collect during the next trading round. In addition bonus cards can move you further
forward, or if you fail to get enough of your main type, bonus cards can
penalise you. Won various family game
awards.
Billabong, published by Franjos. 1995. Box. New. £18
Designed by Eric Solomon. No. players:
2-4. Country: German, Duration: 30 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Race game with wooden pieces. Clever game of pure skill with no dice,
cards or other elements of luck. Each player controls 5 kangaroos, that must
race round the Billabong (an Australian water-hole). This is done by jumping your
kangaroos over other pieces - the further away the piece is the further away
you will land from it on the other side.
Alternatively you can move a piece a single space in order to position
your kangaroo for a better jump in the future.
Black Box Plus, published by Franjos. 2007. Box. In shrink. £16
Designed by Eric Solomon. No. players: 2.
Country: German, Duration: 20 mins, Desc. by Andy.
This is an excellent deduction game. You can play the original Black Box in which
one player secretly sets the position of 4 light reflecting 'atoms' in an 8x8
square grid and the other player sends theoretical rays of light into the black
box, and is told where the ray of light comes out. Since the light may have been reflected by multiple 'atoms' this
can get quite complex and requires quite a bit of logical thought. This edition also includes a trickier
challenge - the same game played on an 8 across hexagonal grid, with a few
extra rules for how rays interact with the atoms. Recommended to fans of logic
and deduction games.
Blackbeard, published by Avalon Hill. 1991. Box. Excellent. £18
Designed by Richard Berg.. No. players:
1-4. Country: American, Duration: 1-3 hrs, Desc. by Andy.
Each player controls a pirate and a King's
Commissioner hunting other pirates.
Pirates attempt to gain notoriety and treasure while hampering the other
pirates' attempts to do the same.
Pirates start in a small ship but can take over larger ships they
capture at sea. Ports can be sacked and
pirate bases set up, as well as the traditional attack on merchant vessels at
sea. Highly suitable for solitaire play too. Playing time varies according to
the number of players, from 1-3 hrs (longer with more players).

Blow Football, published by Unknown. ca.1950. Box. Good. £2
Designer Unknown. No. players: 2-6.
Country: British, Desc. by Andy.
There is no indication of publisher or
date anywhere. It could well be older
than indicated. Included are two goals with goalkeepers, a ball and 6
blowpipes. No rules are included as
none are needed - you just blow the ball into the opposing team's goal, while
the other player attempts to stop you and get the ball into your goal.

Caesar & Cleopatra, published by Rio Grande Games. 1997.
Box. Excellent. £11
Designed by Wolfgang Ludtke. No. players:
2. Country: German, Duration: 1 hr, Desc. by Andy.
Card game. Caesar and Cleopatra compete
for the favour of various influential factions. This is done by card play and
cards can be placed either openly or secretly.
What adds interest is that you need to try to keep as many factions on
your side as possible all the time as you don't know when each group will cast
its vote. The cards are longer than
normal playing cards. Part of Kosmos' excellent 2 player game range and thus
comes in the fairly small square box.
Cafe Race, published by Homoludicus. 2006. Box. Excellent. £12
Designed by Fran F G. No. players: 3-6.
Country: Spanish, Duration: 15 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Light race game which uses dice as the
driving mechanism, but in an unusual way.
One die is rolled per player and these will be used for movement, but in
order to claim these dice players bid with another die, which they turn to
whatever side they choose. The higher
the sum of the bid and movement dice the more likely a slip-up will be during
the race. Too many slip-ups and the
player must restart from the beginning, so a balance between speed and caution
is required to win.
Campus, published by Amigo. 1985. Box. Good. £9
Designed by Andre Francois. No. players:

Special notes: Photocopied rules
On the nomination list for Spiel des
Jahres 1985. Puzzle type game of the same genre as Take It Easy. Players take it in turns to roll two dice
and turn over tiles with numbers which can add up to the number rolled. Players aim to turn over all but one tile in
a line as then they can turn over the last one 'for free', which could cause a
chain reaction. The objective is to try
to be the first to turn over all your tiles.
Cash 'N Guns, published by Repos Productions. 2005. Box. In
shrink. £21
Designed by Ludovic Maublanc. No. players:
4-6. Country: Belgium, Duration: 30 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Fun game in which each player gets a foam
gun and some cards. Players secretly
choose a card, which can be either a blank or a live round, and then
simultaneously everyone points their gun at another player. Players then get a chance to duck out (if
they feel there are too many guns pointing at them). Anyone still in shoots and
/ or gets shot, and those left standing divide up the round's booty. Three wounds and you're out. Several rounds are played until all cards
are used, and then the richest living player wins! This set includes two optional additions to the basic game: Super
Powers, and A Cop In The Middle.

Chinese Chequers, published by Chad Valley. ca.1930. Box.
Box poor. £5
Designer Unknown. No. players: 2-6. Country:
British, Duration: 30 mins, Desc. by Eamon.
Very nice version of this classic - good
enough to keep out on your coffee table.
The board is made of tin-plate and is attractively coloured, with a Chinese
theme. The pieces are plastic pegs, 6 sets of 10. The board has holes for where
the pieces move, and they peg into the board during play. The box is complete,
but the glue is failing and it is not in very good condition, though it does have the rules printed on it
Citadel, published by FGU. 1976. Packet. Good. £6
Designed by Roy Goodman. No. players: 2.
Country: American, Duration: 90 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Board game played on 6 double-sided boards
representing different levels within a tower. One player decides on the layout
of the boards and inhabits it with teleports, creatures and traps. The other
player is a hero trying to get through to the top to find the magic talisman.
The combat system is unusual, using percentile dice (not included). Early fantasy game - predating Dungeons
& Dragons.
Clocktowers, published by Jolly Roger Games. 2004. Box. New. £7.
Desc. by Andy.
Designed by Alan Moon & Aaron
Weissblum. No. players: 2-4. Country: American, Duration: 20 mins. Card game in
which players build clocktowers using the cards. The cards show the various components of a clocktower, which are:
normal levels either one or two storeys high, the clock and the roof. The various sections can come with or
without cats and mice. A clocktower
must be built up from the ground correctly, and when complete is worth points
depending on the cats and mice in it.
Also there are restrictions on the height of the buildings which can be
built which means you have to keep an eye on what your opponents are doing too.

your cards and play them out all in one go.
Cuba, published by Eggert Spiele. 2007. Box. Excellent.
£24. Desc. by Andy.
Designed by Michael Rieneck, Stefan
Stadler. No. players: 2-5. Country: German, Duration: 2 hrs. Strategic resource
management game. Players each have
their own plantation from which they can extract building materials and also
produce crops. However, buildings can
also be built over parts of the plantation giving added benefits but reducing
the production capacity of the plantation.
Players choose actions using character cards and plenty of thought is
needed to optimise your play. There are
many different routes to victory.
Fantastic artwork throughout.
Highly recommended. I have a couple of house rules I can pass on too.
Das Letzte Paradies, published by Franckh. 1993. Box. Good.
£16
Designed by Reiner Knizia. No. players:
3-5. Country: German, Duration: 40 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Special notes: There is a (coffee ?) stain
on the front cover - not very noticeable as the cover is deep blue.
Auction based game with very nice
components including wooden coins and wooden trees. Players are developers on
an island paradise, hoping to build hotels but also maintain some areas as
wilderness. Bidding is in the fist, but the highest bidder pays only as much as
the second highest bid. Players must
take care not to get carried away and bid too much or they will end the game
with less than they started with, which means they lose even if they had more
money than the other players.

Defender, published by Milton Bradley. 1983. Box. Good. £4.50
Designer Unknown. No. players: 2. Country:
British, Desc. by Andy.
Board game based on the 1980's arcade game
of the same name. Both players control
Defender ships which have to protect Earth from alien landers which seek to
abduct humans and turn them into mutants which return to attack the Defenders.
A spinner is used each turn to decide what type of move you must make, but in
each case you can make use of the move to benefit yourself or hinder your
opponent. Interestingly the game ends
only when one player has lost all 6 of his Defenders, and the player with most
points wins, which may not be the player who still has Defenders left.

Card game with an ancient Greek
theme. Players represent cities and
play cards to lay out an impressive parade with which they hope to prove their
city's worth. Thus heroes and warriors
will be played, but also the powers of the gods and the Delphi oracle can be
called upon to alter the status quo, Each player has the same set of cards to
work with (though not all in hand at once), and these must be used over three
parades in order to gain as many Fame points as possible.

Designed by Rob Bontenbal. No. players:

Special notes: For £1.50 extra I will

This is the reprint of the famously rare
game Homas Tour. Won the German Spiel Des Jahres 1992. Bicycle racing game in which each player
controls a team of 4 cyclists and the objective is to do as well as possible
with all your riders. The basic mechanism emphasizes the importance of
slipstreaming. Essentially the rider at
the head of a line rolls 2d6 and moves, but those behind can either follow on
using the same movement value, or decide the front man is too weak and roll for
themselves. Neat idea. However, to make
things more interesting there are also mountains, sprint sections, energy cards
for surges when needed, event cards and even the option to grab onto a passing
car - but don't get caught doing this! Recommended.
Der Fliegende Holländer, published by Parker. 1992. Box. Good, 1
corner taped. £13
Designed by Klaus Teuber. No. players:
3-6. Country: German, Duration: 75 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Interesting game, with wooden pieces,
cards, and horseshoe tiles with racks to keep them on. Players set out to make
money as merchant traders, but must avoid meeting the Flying Dutchman, who will
curse their voyage if they should cross paths. The player who gains the highest
value of shares (representing wealth) by the end will win. The Dutchman is controlled
by the players throughout the game, but care is needed to use your influence
wisely or you will be caught near the end with no influence left just when you
need it most. Plenty of decisions to make. Plays especially well with 5-6
players. Recommended.
DHV Round 1, published by Robot Martini. 2007. Packet. Excellent.

DHV stands for Drinking, History,
Violence. Card game in which players play attack, struggle or booze cards
alternately until one player passes.
The cards are then actioned in reverse order, so that some cards end up
blocked and some enhanced, with many doing damage to your opponent. Can be combined with DHV Round 2 for play
with up to 4 players. The characters in this set are Mahatma Zombie and
Sintaclaws.

Dicey Dunces, published by Peter Pan. 1974. Box. Good. £0.75

Children's game (ages 4-9 recommended),
with a 'pop-o-matic' dice shaker built into the board. The dice indicates either red or yellow and
each turn a 'dunce' counter must be placed onto either a red or yellow space as
the dice indicates. The objective is to get all your dunces onto spaces of the
same colour.
Die Kaufleute Von Amsterdam, published by Jumbo. 1999. Box. Good. £10
Designed by Reiner Knizia. No. players:
3-5. Country: German, Duration: 1 hr, Desc. by Andy.
Notes: Some indentation of base in one corner.
2 control markers missing (but this won't affect play at all).
Players are the heads of rich merchant
families. Game play is driven by Dutch auctions, and the game includes a large
clockwork device which controls these auctions, and this makes for some very
tense moments. Players bid for
commodities to ship to the far reaches of the world, the right to build in key
places in Amsterdam and for prominence as a shipping company. A clever time line system ensures events
occur in a similar way to the real world, and gives players an idea of what
they need to concentrate on.
Essentially a good majorities game, with plenty to think about.
Die Schlacht Der Dinosaurier, published by Schmidt. 1994. Box. Good.
£35
Designed by Steve Baker. No. players: 2-4.
Country: German, Duration: 90 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Special notes: A few figures no longer sit
on their bases properly and have been blue-tacked into position - you may want
to glue them more permanently.
Wonderfully produced light multi-player
wargame. Players each have a hoard of dinosaurs of various sizes (all with
wonderful and large plastic figures), and cards which are used to move and
attack enemy units. Combat uses dice, but more dice are used by bigger dinos.
Special lava balls can be used to reroll dice when really needed. So amazingly produced it just has to be
seen to be believed.

Card game in which players open mines and
try to extract valuable metal while attacking other players' mines with bandits
and defending their own mines. The
mined metal is only safe once the mine has been safely closed. Play can either
be as individuals or better as a 4 player partnership game, in which case the
choice on your turn is play a card, or draw a card or pass a card to your
partner. At the end of the game the team with the most valuable metal wins.

55 cards show different arrangements for 5
sticks. One card is drawn and the
matchsticks laid out according to the diagram on it. Players are dealt cards and try to find a way to move a single
matchstick to make the patterns on their cards. There are four versions of the
game to play, but all are based on this principle.

Update and retheme of Jumbo's Tycoon. The players are 15th century merchant
captains sent out to sail around the known world and set up trading business in
the major cities. Doing this will cost
money, and money is tight. Loans can be taken out, though the cost is
high. Players vie for supremacy in the
various cities with payouts at the end of each game year. Essentially a
business game, but a clever one, and with a large number of updates and new
ideas compared to Tycoon. This includes
the ability to play with 2 and 5 players as well as various expansions /
variants which are all included.
Elasund: Die Erste Stadt, published by Kosmos. 2005. Box.

Settlers of Catan themed game in which the
first city of Catan, Elasund, is built up. The game uses different mechanics to
regular Settlers. Players play building
tiles onto a gridded board representing a city. These buildings can get you money and building materials which
you will need to purchase further buildings.
VPs can be gained by playing prestigious buildings, building city walls and
collecting most trade points. This game allows more conflict than Settlers as
it is possible to build over other players' buildings when placing a larger
tile. Recommended.

Designed by Henri Sala. No. players: 2-4.

Players each own two elephants which all
move along a track. On various spaces
there are logs which the elephants collect for points. However, there are also water spaces where
elephants' movement is substantially restricted. Each turn a player can either move any three elephants 1, 2 and 3
spaces or move all of a connected group of elephants forward one space. At the end of the track there are spaces
with more logs to reward the elephants who get to the end first. Nicely produced game with Indian graphics
and nice wooden playing pieces.

Game of discovery and exploration by ship.
Each turn you pay for a number of tiles you want to explore, and position your
ship either at the edge of the board or on a previously explored tile. You then turn over tiles showing parts of
islands and add them to the board as your ship sails. You can then pay to add a scout, outpost or settlement on a tile.
When islands are completed players score according to their presence on the
island. As well as keeping an eye on the way the islands are turning out you
also need to manage your money well. I
also have some house rules which I find improve the game further. Highly recommended.

Revised and enhanced version of the
classic, Wildlife Adventure. On the nominations list for the German Spiel Des
Jahres 1997 and one of Kramer's best games in my opinion. It is played on a map of the world and
players must direct 3 expeditions to reach animals they have cards for. This is done by laying coloured arrows onto
the board and gaining special actions at various locations and using up
valuable travel vouchers to get you extra moves or more vouchers. This version
also has optional advanced rules which add to the game considerably - forming
loops gives an additional placement.
Highly recommended.

Players take the role of powerful
dynasties in late medieval Germany. There are seven regions in which these
dynasties vie for supremacy, which is gained using aristocrats, knights and
cities. Once the regions are resolved their new leaders get to vote for who will be the new emperor,
who gets several advantages. Game play
involves spending limited money to use action cards to get your aristocrats,
knights and cities into play. In
addition at the end of each turn the aristocrats age and some retire. Players
must carefully consider the best of many ways to gain VPs. Published in America
as In The Shadow Of The Emperor.

The board represents an archaeological dig
with buildings, tombs, canals and paths to be excavated. Each of these elements covers several spaces
and are worth different numbers of VPs.
Many spaces on the square grid hold several of these elements too. Players take turns placing their
archaeologists onto the edge of the board and moving them onto the board using
dice rolls. However, the more experienced
archaeologist pieces allow a reroll, and there are always several possibilities
of what to do. Opponents’ pieces can
also be captured for points and the board can be constructed in many different
ways for a different setup each time.

Unusual air travel themed game with an
abstracted map of the world. Players
each have a control token which can take control of one of the aeroplanes on
the board at a time. There are open destination cards which indicate locations
the players try to reach. Movement is
by dice, but with much flexibility in how you use your rolls, as well as the
possibility of blocking others so you can get to a location first. However, in order to land on a continent you
must have requisitioned a suitable aeroplane so sometimes you will need to
change planes first. The objective is to collect a fixed number of points worth
of destination cards (some are more valuable than others).

Resource management and development game
set in a a fantasy kingdom. Unusually for
this type of game, play is dice driven - players roll a set of three dice which
they can split up as they feel fit to claim spaces. Each space gives benefits or resources, the higher the number of
the space the more advantageous the space, though the harder it is to
claim. Players can spend resources to
construct buildings on their individual board and gain new benefits as well as
VPs. After every three rounds an enemy attacks the kingdom and the players need
to have built up strong enough defences to resist them, otherwise there can be
unpleasant consequences. The player
with most VPs at game end wins.

Dexterity game which uses a wooden see-saw
with grooved sections onto which wooden cubes of various sizes can be
placed. Unusually the objective is to
make as much as possible fall off in your turn, as everything that falls off is
given to your opponent. However, the
important restriction is that when cubes fall off. the see-saw must also tip
over, otherwise your turn ends and you keep any fallen cubes. The objective is to get rid of all your
cubes. Works surprisingly well, and is
good fun. Recommended.

A look at the legal system in Britain.
Players take court actions against each other, ultimately trying to win a case
in the House of Lords, and to double their money. Game play involves moving around a track on the board and
actioning the various spaces. However
players also get the chance to challenge various actions in court, though it
costs money to hamper your opponent in this way. Players will have to decide which actions to defend and which to
let go. The game uses lots of different
types of cards to resolve challenges etc. The box is styled to look like a
black briefcase.

You are one of two hobbits, Sam or Frodo,
who set out on an adventure meeting up with various allies (Aragorn, Gandalf,
Gimli, Legolas etc), and encountering various orcs, trolls and other monsters
in the wilderness areas, as well as obtaining treasures along the way. Despite
the name, game-play feels much more like a generic fantasy game than a Lord of
the Rings related game, as the hobbits are competing rather than cooperating.
That said it still plays well, and has some interesting mechanics including
using square spaces which are oriented diagonally across the square land tiles.

Medici Vs Strozzi, published by Rio Grande Games. 2006.
Box. In shrink. £13
Designed by Reiner Knizia. No. players: 2.
Country: American, Duration: 30 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Two player version of Reiner Knizia's
excellent auction game, Medici. Each
player has three boats which they try to fill with a variety of goods, and then
send to harbour - each harbour only deals in a selection of the goods, however,
so not all goods may be of value. There
is also a bonus for the more heavily laden ship in each harbour each turn as
well as cumulative points for the player who has delivered the most of each
type of goods traded in each harbour. Rather
than using an auction one player sets the price of a batch of goods, and the
other accepts this or refuses it, in which case the player who set the price
must take it for that amount.

land by helicopter, and then seek out the missing jewels. Movement is unusual, using ladders to climb
to the rooftops (a cardboard ladder is provided) and swinging on the end of
ropes once there (this is done using metal rings attached by chains to connect
playing pieces). Also it is possible to obstruct enemy agents, throwing off the
rooves into the river. First to get the jewels back to the awaiting helicopter
wins.

Players can also send saracens, catapults and militia to destroy and
steal from opposing holdings (though they can be rebuffed), and send bishops to
take over control of abbeys. Money can
be spent to gain more cards which gives you more you can do, but also needs to
be held as victory points to win the game.

The players are challenged to steal the
Crown Jewels from the Tower of London.
However, this is a hard task as the security is such that you cannot
take anything useful in with you, but must find suitable equipment as you
wander the Tower looking like a tourist.
Only then can you make an attempt at the theft, but you may end up in
one of the jails, and have to escape using a disguise or perhaps get a Royal
Pardon. Play is dice based with equipment cards needing to be collected and
event cards adding variety. The
components are wonderful, with metal miniatures of the crown jewels, replica
medieval coins and metal tower guard figures.

Reversible Vinyl Battlemat, published by Chessex. Packet. New. £10
Designed by Chessex. No. players: 1+.
Country: American, Desc. by Andy.
This is a 27" x 27" reversible
beige battlemat. On one side there are 1" squares and on the other are
1" hexes. Ideal for RPGs when using miniatures for your encounters. You can write on the battlemat using OHP
pens and then wipe them off with a damp cloth after use. I have a big one which has been a regular
fixture in my RPG group for decades, so treated well this will last a long
time. This mat is labelled 'irregular',
which upon inspection means that that the hexes have been printed very slightly
offset so they aren't quite parallel to the edge.

Designer Unknown. No. players: 2-4.
Country: American, Duration: 20 mins, Desc. by Andy.

more than one team is crossed off, and remaining items listed score a point each. The pictures are large (about 25x35cm) and
on one side there is a cartoon picture and on the other a very detailed and
realistic painting crammed with unusual items.
A dice is rolled to determine which section of each picture will be used
each game (with cover sheets provided) and there are 12 double sided picture
sheets in all.

Situation 4, published by Parker. 1968. Box. Good. £15
Designer Unknown. No. players: 2 or 4.
Country: American, Duration: 20 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Excellent idea for a game. Each side has
enough pieces of land (cut into jigsaw shapes) to complete a map of the entire
board, but each side's set is a slightly different colour. Play is
simultaneous, adding to you side of the puzzle as you find the pieces. As
pieces are added to the board, some have spaces for plastic pieces to be added
such as flags, tanks and bridges. These
are used to defend your land against attack, or to start a campaign to obtain
opponent's adjacent land. Thus you really do have a jigsaw puzzle driven light
wargame! Recommended.

Standoff, published by Berwick. 1974. Box. Good. £8.50
Designed by Howard Wexler. No. players:
2-4. Country: British, Duration: 20 mins, Desc. by Andy.
A little seen game in which players play
cards simultaneously and then reveal, with the highest card taking the points
on offer that round. In the case of
ties the next highest card wins. Thus
this is essentially an earlier version of Alex Randolph's very popular Hols der
Geier, but with a few differences - mainly that not all the prize cards come
out each game. In addition each player
has a board with pegs and they must mark off the cards they have played so
everyone can clearly see which cards you have to pick from.

Starship Catan, published by Mayfair Games. 2001. Box. In shrink.
£20
Designed by Klaus Teuber. No. players: 2.
Country: American, Duration: 90 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Card based space game which uses many of
the ideas from the Settlers Card game, and the background from Sternenfahrer
Catan. The game uses stacks of cards
which represent quadrants of space, with the cards representing planets you can
trade with, colonisable planets, missions to fulfil to gain VPs and fame, and
space pirates. Each player also has a ship board onto which extra boosters,
lasers, system upgrades and cargo can be added. The game plays very well indeed, and the feel fits the theme
nicely. Highly recommended. I also have some house rules which reduce
the memory element of the card stacks - let me know if you want these.

match with adjacent dice. Thus it is
possible to set up places where your remaining dice can go, but your opponent's
cannot. The objective is to play out as
many of your dice as possible and in a tie to have as few pips remaining as
possible.

The Stock Market Game, published by Avalon Hill. 1970. Box. Box
corners taped. £6.50
Designed by Thomas Shaw. No. players: 2-6.
Country: American, Duration: 1 hr, Desc. by Andy.
Interesting business game with 4
scenarios, including one that takes you through the 1929 Wall Street Crash. It
also shows how you could make money when everyone else is losing theirs.
Players buy and sell 5 stocks to make the most money. Players simultaneously
place counters to indicate buying or selling while a timer ticks away. A card decides whether the market is bull,
bear or mixed, and the stock price changes depending on how many people are
buying and selling that stock. There are also rules for stock splits, stock
conversion, margin buying and short selling.

Designer Unknown. No. players: 2. Country:
British, Desc. by Eamon.
Special notes: Box slightly indented due
to stacking - almost inevitable with this game as the box is large and not very
strong
Well intentioned game but overtaken by
real-life events. Suddenly there wasn't a Berlin Wall! An espionage game in which players try to
get their secret agents out of their opponent's embassies with top secret
papers and back to their own bases.
However, some agents are actually double agents. The board is large and an attractive
representation of the city, with the wall and a few ways under or over it - all
dangerous - and other special places dotted around too.
The World Cup Game, published by Games For The World. 2005.
Box. Excellent. £28
Designed by Shaun Derrick. No. players:
3-16. Country: British, Duration: 1-3 hrs, Desc. by Andy.
World Cup Football (Soccer) board game
which allows you to replay the 1930 tournament in Uruguay and the 2002 Japan /
Korea tournament. Play involves playing cards onto the board which shows the
various teams - cards are played for each match in the tournament, with the
better ranked teams getting the benefit of more cards. Cards allow goals to be scored as well as
fouls and offsides to reduces goals scored.
A clever system which goes into more detail than the otherwise similar
game from Australian Design Group a few years ago. The author plans to make boards for other tournaments available
in due course.

Tichu, published by Abacus Spiele. 1998. Box. In shrink.
£4.50
Designer Unknown. No. players: 3-10 (4).
Country: German, Duration: 1 hr, Desc. by Andy.
Card game set with rules to several games,
including a game very similar to Kariere Poker / The Great Dalmuti for up to 10
players. However, the main event is Tichu itself which is an excellent four
player partnership game played with a standard deck of cards plus four special
cards. It is a 'climbing' game, which
means that players play a particular type of combination (eg pair or run) to a
trick, but subsequent players can only play higher sets of the same type. The highest played wins the trick and leads
to the next one with the objective of getting rid of all your cards. Sounds simple, but there are quite a few
extras which make this great and a different challenge every hand. My favourite card game, so highly
recommended.
Tom Jolly's Camelot, published by Wingnut Games. 2005. Box.
In shrink. £12
Designed by Tom Jolly. No. players: 3-6.
Country: American, Duration: 30 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Athurian legend themed simultaneous play
battle game! Each player has their own group
of characters from Arthurian legend, and each player has the objective of
retrieving Excalibur for their own village. Each character has its own ability,
and some return to the village for further use when defeated in combat rather
than being eliminated. The game uses a
novel system which encourages the players to play swiftly: two turn tokens are
in play at any time, and when you are a passed a turn token it is your
turn. However, if you already have one
you are passed over! Very novel.

Trespass, published by Lakeside. 1979. Box. Good. £6
Designed by Alex Randolph. No. players: 2.
Country: American, Duration: 10 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Alex Randolph isn't credited, but this is
the same game as his Buffalo, so I will describe that as it is easier to
visualise. On an 11x7 grid the buffalo
can only move one space forward, but there are 11 of them. Opposing them are 4 dogs who move like chess
queens, and an Indian who moves like a chess king. The Indian is the only piece
that can eliminate another piece. The
Buffalo player wins if he can get any one piece to the opposite side of the
board while the Indian and dogs have to prevent this. Trespass is the same game but doesn't mention Indians, dogs or
buffalo, and just has red, blue/black and yellow pieces.
Tugs, published by Octogo. 1990. -. Good. £2.50
Designer Unknown. No. players: 2-4.
Country: British, Desc. by Andy.
TV related, based on the animated
children's show about the adventures of the Star Tugs in the Big City Port. Each
player must collect a waiting ship from the harbour and then navigate a safe
course through the water hazards The board is in 4 parts but when assembled it
is quite large (594mm x 840mm).
Movement is by dice throw, but careful positioning is required to start
towing the target ship and to dock it.
It is also possible to block your opponents' movement as well.

printed and laminated English game aids as well as English rules.
Published as To Court The King in
America. Dice game in which players
attempt to roll particular dice combinations in order to claim the aid of
character cards which each show a Tudor style noble, and each of which gives
the player an additional benefit on future turns. The objective is to recruit sufficient nobles to your cause and
gaining their privileges in order to be able to win the King card - the first
to manage this gets a big advantage in a final round. Recommeneded.
UWO, published by Elven Ear Games. 2004. Box. In shrink.
£6.50
Designed by Thomas Jansen. No. players: 2.
Country: Dutch, Duration: 50 mins, Desc. by Andy.
The title stands for Unidentiifed Walking
Objects. Each player leads either the Pnorfs or the Znorfs, who have an intense
mutual dislike, and so fight for control of their planet. Each alien has a
different power eg. bazooka, tank, laser, bunker etc, making each immune to one
other type of alien, and having its own method of attack. Action points are used to move and attack
with your UWOs, who can also 'morf' into other types of UWO by playing cards. A
well received tactical two player card game with an aliens at war theme.

£16
Designed by Stefano Luperto. No. players:
3-6. Country: Italian, Duration: 25 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Clever and fun game in which there are 13
possible contenders for the throne when the old king dies. Each player receives a card which indicates
6 of those candidates they would like to see do well. Players then take it in turn to promote one candidate up a level
in court. Should a candidate be pushed
up to the throne then all players vote on whether that candidate becomes
king. It only takes one person to say
no, and the candidate is executed rather than crowned! However, each player can vote Yes as many times
as they like, but No only twice! When a king is crowned players score for all
living candidates according to how high a rank they have achieved in
court. Great fun, fast and amusing.
Recommended.

and get to discover clues about opponents' famous people, sometimes openly and

Wicked Witches Way, published by Asmodee Editions (US).
2006. Box. Excellent. £12. Desc. by Andy.
Designed by Bruno Cathala, Serge Laget.
No. players: 2-6. Country: American, Duration: 30 mins. The players are witches
in a broomstick race. Each player has a
set of 9 cards which show symbols which are also in two colours on a set of 9
magic formula dice. Each round these 9
dice are rolled into the box and when a player has seen enough they flap over a
'lid' so that the dice are no longer visible.
Players then lay out face down symbol cards which were on the dice of
just one colour, and which were not 'cancelled out' by symbols of the other
colour. Players then check the dice and
players advance according to how many correct symbols they put out. Getting any wrong means you don't advance,
and bonus cards and movement can be gained by getting a complete formula. Requires quick thinking and concentration.
