Mar 2008 Catalog
While I don’t publish my latest catalog on the internet, this older catalog is available for you to look through to get an idea of the sort of thing I generally have. Please be aware that many of the games in this catalog will have already sold, and if they haven’t then the prices are not necessarily still valid – the prices are only valid in the month the catalog comes out! However, if you do see something of interest email me and I’ll let you know if I still have it. Also getting the monthly catalog by email is free and without obligation, so why not just ask to be added to my subscription list, or ask me to send you the latest catalog by email?
1830, published by Avalon Hill. 1986. Box. Good. £38
Designed by Francis
Tresham. No. players: 3-6. Country:
American, Duration: 5 hrs, Desc. by Andy.
Very popular 18XX railroad game. This game
has a stock market system that lets you wheel and deal in the shares, so you do
not necessarily have to have a major stockholding in one of the big companies
in order to do well. The game is played on a map of the Eastern U.S. Very
highly regarded.
3000 Metres Steeplechase, published by Lambourne. 1994. Packet.
Good. £5
Designed by Terry Goodchild. No. players:
1+. Country: British, Desc. by Andy.
Expansion to 'The Long Distance Double'
from the same company, but playable standalone. The basic game system is the same as the parent game, but changes
have been made to reflect the different nature of steeplechase events - having
to accelerate into the hurdles and water jumps every 80m or so. Statistic cards
for 48 athletes are included in the game. If you have Long Distance Double you
can use the track and playing pieces from it to show race positions. Without it you can play by using a track record
sheet to do the same job in a less visual way.
4000 A.D., published by Waddingtons. 1972. Box. Good, but box
base indented. £1
Designer Unknown. No. players: 2-4.
Country: British, Duration: 90 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Space empire combat game using a clever
hidden hyperspace movement system. No dice used, so very much a game of skill
as players defeat opposing ships and fleets.
It can be played either each man for himself or with allied partners.
50 Card Games For Children, published by Whitman Publishing. 1933.
Book. Good. £2
Designed by Vernon Quinn. Country:
American, Desc. by Andy.
Card game book covering 20 card games
children can play, 12 solitaire games, 12 card tricks, 5 more grown up games
and also an introduction to contract bridge.
1933 is the copyright date, but this edition is more recent - perhaps
1950s.
6 Nimmt, published by Amigo. 1994. Box. In shrink. £6
Designed by Wolfgang Kramer. No. players:
2-10. Country: German, Duration: 45 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Card game with 104 playing cards numbered
1-104. As well as the number each card
shows 1-5 bulls heads, which are penalty points. Each round players simultaneously choose cards to play, and then
reveal. The cards are added to rows
lowest first, but a 6th card in a row forces you take all those already in a
row as penalty points. Fun light game,
which has proved very popular, and won the well regarded Deutsche Spiele Preis
in 1994.
A Nightmare On Elm Street, published by Victory. 1987. Box. Box
shows wear, 2 corners taped. £2
Designed by Robert J Ryer. No. players:
2-6. Country: American, Duration: 1 hr, Desc. by Andy.
Film related, based on the series of
horror movies. Each player must spend the game 'asleep', and try to get out of
the nightmare world inhabited by Freddie. It has a neat twist in that each
player has a secret partner in the game, so if you get to win, your secret
partner also wins. The large board shows the nightmare maze out of which the
players are trying to escape. Game play
involves playing cards, of various types, some of which will let you move
either yourself or Freddie depending on whether it matches the current card
type in play, and others which ward off Freddie for a while.
Adel Verpflichtet, published by Avalon Hill. 1991. Box.
Excellent. £10
Designed by Klaus Teuber. No. players:
2-5. Country: American, Duration: 1 hr, Desc. by Andy.
Clever game in which the players attempt
to obtain large collections of antiques.
The antiques are represented by cards and include items such as Marilyn Monroe's
lipstick and Sir Walter Raleigh's pipe.
Each turn players simultaneously choose whether to attend the auction
house to buy more antiques or go to a stately home. In the auction house players can either bid or try to steal
money. In the stately home players can
either put on an exhibition to gain points, try to steal from an exhibition or
be a detective to catch any thieves. To
do well you need to be able to work out what other players are likely to do, and
act accordingly. Won the Spiel des Jahres
1990 in Germany. Recommended.
Air Football, published by The Discovery Store. ca.1995. Box.
Good. £6
Designer Unknown. No. players: 2. Country:
British, Duration: 15 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Miniature version of table-top air
hockey. The set is about 45cm long, and
the players each have two pinball style flippers which they use to protect
their goalmouth, and to attack their opponent's. The game has an air pump which expels air through holes in the
playing surface and ensures the flat ball glides smoothly and quickly. A frantic and fun all action game - great
fun for kids and adults alike.
Airships At War, published by Sierra Madre Games. 2007.
Packet. New. £14
Designed by Phil Eklund. No. players: 1-2.
Country: American, Duration: 1 hr, Desc. by Andy.
Solitaire or two player game of zeppelins
in WW1 and the Pacific. This set
combines two previous games: Luftschiff and ZRCV into a single set. The game has a 26 page rules booklet, but
this includes 17 scenarios, designers notes and some optional rules.
Ambush, published by Victory. 1983. Box. Good. £19. Desc. by
Andy.
Designed by Eric Lee Smith & John H
Butterfield. No. players: 1. Country: American, Duration: 4 hrs.
Ground-breaking solitaire wargame.
Features 8 replayable missions set in WWII France. You ‘roll up’ the characters
who will be in your platoon which adds variety to the missions. The game uses a
programmed paragraph system. You
control a U.S. squad, and have numerous tactical options and an unpredictable
enemy and can equip your men as you see fit.
Very well regarded game.
Andromeda, published by Abacus Spiele. 1999. Box. In shrink.
£12
Designed by Alan R Moon. No. players: 3-5.
Country: German, Duration: 1 hr, Desc. by Andy.
Graphics by Doris Matthaus. Very
interactive, as players attempt to trade with a new galaxy. The game is about
trading for sets of cards and using them to upgrade spaceships and trying to
gain control of the various planets. While skill and judgement will help there
is a randomising mechanism which resolves success in taking over a space port,
but which does make it more likely you will win the more effort you put in. The
game also uses an interesting card trading mechanism between the players.
Animal Crackers, published by Waddingtons. 1987. Box.
Good. £0.75
Designed by Gyles Brandreth. No. players:
1+. Country: British, Duration: 20 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Card game, with cards featuring over 300
jokes. There are three simple games, all based on guessing the punchlines to
the joke cards. Playing solo involves reading the jokes and trying to guess the
answers. These are the types of jokes
you might find in a Christmas cracker.
Arena, published by Altar. 1997. Box. In shrink. £28
Designed by Vladimir Chvatil. No. players:
2+. Country: Czech Republic, Duration: 45 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Card game of tactical fantasy gladiatorial
combat. Players use their cards in planned moves against their enemy, who can
be another human or a creature like an orc. Includes 5 metal miniatures as
playing pieces. Game play uses innovative mechanics. Highly regarded game.
Arkadia, published by Ravensburger. 2007. Box. In shrink. £26
Designed by Rüdiger Dorn. No. players:
2-4. Country: German, Duration: 1 hr, Desc. by Andy.
Special notes: This is the International
version which includes English rules.
Strategy game in which the players build
up the city of Arkadia. Players
introduce buildings and set their workers around the buildings in such a way that
many workers will be able to work on several buildings. When a building is
surrounded the workers around it get paid and the player who caused the scoring
gets a bonus. Payment is with seals of
different colours, and during the game the values of these seals
fluctuates. They need to be sold to
gain money which wins the game, but this can only be done a few times during
the game. Clever placement and good
timing are required to do well.
Recommended.
Atlanteon, published by Fantasy Flight. 2003. Box. In shrink.
£9
Designed by Reiner Knizia. No. players: 2.
Country: American, Duration: 30 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Attractive tile laying game in which the
undersea city of Atlanteon is being attacked. Players vie for control over
three vital buildings in the city, as well as trying to ensure a safe location
for their king. There are several ways to win, so you have to watch your
opponent's plans carefully. The tiles placed represent underwater warriors,
mages and beasts of varying strengths, which help control the spaces around
them. This was originally published as Revolution, but with a different theme.
Neat game.
Barrier, published by Aladdin. 1974. Box. Good. £6
Designer Unknown. No. players: 2. Country:
American, Duration: 20 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Played on a draughts board, but with
transparent pieces, as the central two rows get set up with special spaces
which allow different directions of movement to normal. Unlike draughts, pieces may move forward as
well as diagonally, and this combined with the central 'barrier' rows ensures
it does not play at all like draughts, and indeed the changeable barrier will
ensure different options are available each time played..
Basketball Strategy, published by Avalon Hill. 1974. Box. 2
copies available:
1) Good. £3.50 2) Good but 1 corner taped. £3
Designed by Don Greenwood. No. players: 2.
Country: American, Duration: 30 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Cerebral basketball game, but quite unlike
other sports games. The game places each player as a manager of a basketball
team but the game is almost played like a war game, with each player
represented by a counter that has things like Zones of Control. The rules are
split into a basic game, an advanced game, optional rules and a campaign game
for play in a league structure.
Battlecars, published by Games Workshop. 1983. Box. Good. £18.
Desc. by Andy.
Designed by Ian Livingstone and Gary
Chalk. No. players: 2-4. Country: British, Duration: 90 mins.
Special notes: Includes Battlebikes
expansion (all in the one box).
One of the original Games Workshop board
games. Obviously inspired by Car Wars, but a completely different approach.
Bookcase box. Players arm up their vehicles with missiles and guns etc, and
then take to the track, with the goal of eliminating all opposition.
Bazaar, published by Discovery Toys. 1987. Box. Good. £20
Designed by Sid Sackson. No. players: 2-6.
Country: American, Duration: 1 hr, Desc. by Andy.
One of Sid Sackson's most reprinted games,
and worthy of it too. Players trade different gem types for other selections
according to the rules of the market (different every game), aiming to be able
to fulfil one of the order cards and score points. In a clever twist you score
more the fewer gems you have left after each order is fulfilled, and as the
game goes on values of orders increase.
Highly recommended.
Before The Wind, published by Mayfair. 2007. Box.
Excellent. £15
Designed by Torsten Landsvogt. No.
players: 2-4. Country: American, Duration: 75 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Merchant shipping themed card game in
which players take it in turn to make available a selection of cards, and then
bid for the right to use these cards in a clever way. If someone else wants to use the card you choose then you must
either pay them or allow them to pay you to take the card instead of you. Cards can let you obtain goods to put in
your hand, place cards from hand into your warehouse, or ship goods from your
warehouse for victory points. Players
need to take care that the end of the round doesn't creep up unexpectedly as
some of their goods will likely rot if unshipped. Very well regarded game.

Blood Bowl, published by Games Workshop. 1986. Box. Good. £18
Designed by Jervis Johnson. No. players:
2. Country: British, Duration: 2 hrs, Desc. by Andy.
First edition, in a bookcase box. A
humorous fantasy game based on American Football, played between teams of Orcs,
Goblins and Giants, etc.. The rule book is a real hoot, full of ‘facts’ about
the history of the game. The game is a cross between American football, rugby
and a bar brawl.
Bluff, published by F X Schmid. 1993. Box. Excellent. £14
Designed by Richard Borg. No. players:
2-6. Country: German, Duration: 20 mins, Desc. by Andy.
A nice version of Liar's Dice. An
excellent dice game which requires considerable skill and judgement to play
well. The idea is that each player
starts with 5 dice which are rolled secretly and kept hidden under a cup. Players then make increasing bids on what
will be on the dice under all the cups (eg. eight 4's). If a player does not want to up the bid then
the previous bid can be called, and the dice are shown. Getting it wrong will lose you dice. Bluff
won the German Spiel des Jahres in 1993. Highly recommended.
Bohnanza - Fan Edition, published by Lookout Games. 1997. Box.
In shrink. £7
Designed by Uwe Rosenberg. No. players:
3-5. Country: German, Duration: 1 hr, Desc. by Andy.
Card game, 110 attractive cards
representing different types of beans. Players attempt to collect sets of beans
to plant in their fields and then harvest them for money. However, things are not that simple as the
order of cards in your hand is fixed and you can only play from the front. However, players can trade beans they don't
want with other players, and getting good deals and making the best of what you
have is the core of this game. Quite a
revolutionary card game. Recommended.
Also on the nominations list for the 1997 German Spiel des Jahres. This fan
edition has a different picture of each bean on each card - the pictures having
been sent in by fans of the game.
Bohnanza - High Bohn, published by Amigo. 2000. Box.
Excellent. £5.50
Designed by Uwe Rosenberg, Hanno Girke.
No. players: 1-2. Country: German, Duration: 1 hr, Desc. by Andy.
Expansion for Bohnanza with a wild west
theme. Additional cards representing
buildings are provided which can be purchased, and give special abilities - a
different ability depending on which type of bean was cashed in to pay for
it. The buildings are worth points at
the end of the game too. There is also
an expansion for the 1-2 player Al Cabohne game (another standalone Bohnanza
related set).
Breakthru, published by 3M. 1965. Box. Good. £9
Designed by Alex Randolph. No. players: 2.
Country: American, Desc. by Eamon.
Very nice abstract game with 33 chunky
metal pieces. You do not see pieces as heavy as this any more! One player tries
to move his flagship into a set place whilst his opponent tries to set up an
impenetrable blockade.
Bridge For 3, published by Faber & Faber. 1955. Book. Good. £3
Designed by George S. Coffin. No. players:
3. Country: British, Desc. by Andy.
Hardback with dustcover, 19x13cm, 64
pages. This book presents a solution to
what to do when there are only three of you but you want to play bridge. The author calls his three handed bridge
'Trio Bridge', and it is supposedly as close to the real thing as you are
likely to get with three players. The book includes a section on the ways in
which you might want to bid differently in Trio Bridge compared to regular
Bridge, as well as a section on defence and attack.

Camelot Legends, published by Z-Man Games. 2004. Box. In
shrink. £14.50
Designed by Andrew Parks. No. players:
2-4. Country: American, Duration: 75 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Card game based on the Legends of King
Arthur. Over 100 nicely illustrated
cards take the players to Camelot, the Perilous Forest and Cornwall. Players create companies of characters who
they use to complete quests and overcome their enemies. When all has been done the player whose
company has achieved most wins.
Capt'n W. Kidd, published by Bambus Spieleverlag. 2004. Box. 2
copies available:
1) Excellent. £23 2) New. £25
Designed by Günter Cornett. No. players:
2-3. Country: German, Duration: 20 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Limited edition of 333. Clever abstract game given a pirate theme. The roll-out vinyl board shows a ship with
various locations joined by movement lines, and some entry locations. Each location has three exits. Players take
it in turn to place or move a pirate. Cleverly, pirates cannot leave a space
the way they entered it, thus after a while their movement options can be
limited. Surrounding a pirate or group
of pirates forces them to surrender (and they are removed from the game). The idea is to be the last player with
pirates. Variant rules allow for
capturing pirates when approaching them from behind, or for three players to
play. Recommended if you enjoy games of
a more abstract nature.
Caramba!, published by Amigo. 1992. Box. Good. £12
Designed by Alex Randolph. No. players:
2-6. Country: German, Desc. by Eamon.
Beautiful looking game designed with some
of the nicest plastic counters I’ve seen. A race game, where going slow is an
advantage, but quite different to other games with this twist. Also a rich
player can pay to reduce the number of dice he has to roll on his turn, but if
you aren't going to be last in the race, it is better to finish early rather
than late.
Carcassonne: The Discovery, published by Rio Grande Games. 2005.
Box. In shrink. £15
Designed by Leo Colovini. No. players:
2-5. Country: American, Duration: 45 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Standalone game of the Carcassonne family,
and my personal favourite of this line of games. The tile laying mechanism is
similar to the standard game, but as well as an interesting and slightly
different way of scoring areas the main change is that each player has even
fewer men than in other version, but after each tile play you can either play a
man on the tile just played or you can remove a man from the board and score it
- thus scoring isn't automatic when an area is completed, but you can also get
back men which aren't being very productive in an incomplete area while still
getting some score, and then redeploy them elsewhere. Recommended.
Carrier, published by Victory. 1990. Box. Good. £22
Designed by Jon Southard. No. players: 1.
Country: American, Duration: 3-6 hrs, Desc. by Andy.
Massive solitaire game, the Southwest
Pacific Campaign, 1942-1943. Includes historical and hypothetical scenarios.
The game plays the Japanese, using a system that allows for unlimited
variations every time you play. The rules are long but after every few sections
there is a scenario to try out using the rules introduced so far. Thus there are 6 introductory scenarios, a
Standard scenario and then a selection of Advanced scenarios using additional
rules.

Folder. Good. £25
Designed by Jason Glor, Robin Marks,
Darryl See, Rick Smith. No. players: 4-6.
Country: American, Duration: 2 hrs, Desc.
by Andy.
Novel fantasy themed game in which each player
has a secret character with minimal abilities. Each character has a different
set of goals, some of which will be compatible with some other players, and
some with different players. During the game players improve their magical
abilities, combat abilities and their control over 3 royal items which give
control over 3 countries. The players also learn more about their opponents and
about what the results of a magic ritual involving a Book, Bell and Candle will
be. Then the players struggle to complete
the ritual in a way which is favourable to them. A very unusual game which I enjoy greatly - recommended.
Castle Of Magic - The Castle Cursed, published by Cloud Kingdom Games Inc.

freshen up an already excellent game.

Good. £4.50
Designer Unknown. No. players: 2-6.
Country: British, Duration: 45 mins, Desc. by Andy. Special notes: The felt tip
pens have dried out - I will try to revive them, but if this fails you can use
OHP marker pens.
Cosmopolitan is a British magazine for
women, and the main focus is on men, looking good, and having fun. This game is intended for readers of
Cosmopolitan, and the current player reads out a multiple choice question to
her neighbour who then answers and is assigned a point for Love, Work, Play or
Self. After everyone has answered quite
a few rounds of questions each player can read a sort of horoscope based on her
scores in each of these categories.
Cuckoo's Nest, published by Ravensburger. 1982. Box. Good. £3
Designer Unknown. No. players: 2-4.
Country: British, Duration: 15 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Children's game (ages 4-8). Players try to be the first cuckoo to deposit
an egg in each of 6 nests around the board.
Movement is by dice roll, but this only indicates either an event card
for the turn (with symbols, no words) or which colour line the player can
follow that turn to a different nest (not every route has all the coloured
lines).
Daimyo, published by Tenkigames. 2005. Box. In shrink. £17
Designed by Piero Cioni. No. players: 2-4.
Country: Italian, Duration: 1 hr, Desc. by Andy.
Tactical board game with a (somewhat thin)
theme of competing ancient Japanese Daimyos vying for prominence. Game play involves the use of cards to
perform actions such as recruiting more Bushi warriors, extending your
territory, moving warriors or your Daimyo.
Battles are decided by comparing the number of warriors on each side, with
both sides taking losses. Intriguingly cards are passed to an opponent after
use, so you may not always have access to the actions you really want to
perform. The goal is to defeat an opponent's Daimyo.
Der Herr Der Ringe - Die Entscheidung, published by Fantasy Flight Games. 2001.
Box. Excellent. £10
Designed by Reiner Knizia. No. players: 2.
Country: American, Duration: 30 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Special notes: All cards and playing
pieces have been pasted up in English to ease play.
Lord of the Rings themed somewhat
Stratego-like game in which each player controls 9 characters in a battle for
dominance in Middle Earth. The characters each have special powers and in
addition combat is resolved not only by comparing the characters involved
(which have battle strengths and special power texts), but also by the play of
action cards which give additional special abilities and boost battle
strengths. The Fellowship player tries to sneak Frodo through to Mordor
unstopped while the Sauron player tries to kill Frodo or obliterate The Shire.
Die Händler, published by Queen Games. 1999. Box. Good. £20.
Desc. by Andy.
Designed by Wolfgang Kramer & Richard
Ulrich. No. players: 2-4. Country: German, Duration: 2hrs. Attractively
produced game in which the players are merchants in medieval Europe. Wagons are
used to carry wares between cities.
Players buy goods, load them onto wagons and then sell them for profit
when they arrive in other cities. However, the wagons are not owned by
individual players but are communal. Thus skill is needed to ensure the wagons
go where you want them to. The game gives lots of opportunities for players to
cut deals with each other.
Die Safeknacker, published by ASS. 1996. Box. Good.
£10.50
Designed by Stefan Dorra. No. players:
2-5. Country: German, Duration: 20 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Each player manages a team of
safecrackers, some more skilled (and thus requiring more of the booty) than
others. Safe cards show the minimum
number of safecrackers required in a team, and the amount of booty inside. Each turn a player can either recruit
another player's safecracker or team of safecrackers to form a new team or may
use one of their teams to crack a safe.
When a safe is cracked the player who cracks it gets all the money, but
must pay each member of the team for their part - in some cases this may
involve paying out more than was actually in the safe! Most money at the end of the game wins.
Dingbats, published by Waddingtons. 1987. Box. 2 copies
available:
1) Good but box corners taped. £3. Missing
the winner's badge, playing pieces have been replaced.
2) Good. £5
Designed by Paul Sellers. No. players:
2-4. Country: British, Duration: 1hr, Desc. by Andy. This game competed with
the likes of Pictionary and Taboo. It features incredibly clever pictures /
words which cryptically depict a phrase, eg. a card might say: ‘THINGTHING’, and the phrase is “One thing
after another”. Very clever and good
fun. There are also 'Diabolical
DIngbats' which are even harder and more cryptic. An egg timer is used to make the players think quickly.
Doctor Who - Battle For The Universe, published by BBC / The Game Team Ltd.

Each side attempts to build up a powerful team and then through a series
of battles to defeat other teams and try to become the ruler of the universe,
or in the case of the Doctor to stop there being one. The board shows three interconnected movement circles and a Ring
of Battles and Challenges. This last
ring shows which skill is required during the current battle to determine the
winner.

Each player is the boss of a gangster family,
and attends a meeting of the families. Here you must use your cards to gain
protection, earn from various rackets, deliver exploding birthday cakes or
poisoned drinks, knife treacherous rivals and shoot it out with competitors. The game is about positioning your men well
around the table and then making the best use of the cards you get as well as
trying not to make too many enemies who are in a position to hurt you
back. Fun light game.

Special notes: There is some brown parcel
tape on the box lid, and 1 of the 72 category cards is missing, but this does
not affect play.
Family game in which players have to think
of a number of things which fit into a category. There are 144 categories
pictured on cards, but the best thing is the timer, which is clockwork, and
clicks away annoyingly as your time goes down. When sufficient items have been
named and accepted the Stop button is pressed and the number the timer's
pointer is over is that player's score - the quicker you are the higher your
score. A neat timer which could be used
in other games too.

The landmark computer game Doom, turned
into a board game. One player controls the
evil hordes of invaders while the others control elite marines who must destroy
the hordes in order to win and save humanity. The game uses room and corridor
tiles which are laid out to form a map, and 66 plastic miniatures (from 30mm to
80mm) are used in play. Cards provide
additional weapons and equipment etc, and dice are used to resolve combat. The game very much has the look of mid 80's
Games Workshop games such as Space Hulk and the like. Fantastic bits, several scenarios to play, and overall very well
received game.

Unusual game with an environmental
theme. Enix is a huge temperamental
being which lives in the sun, and can cause turmoil here on Earth. The board is formed using large hexagonal
tiles which depict renewable energy sources.
Action cards allow players to move their playing pieces around and to
collect energy. However, Enix can also
interfere and can seriously mess with your plans, so you will need to ensure
you keep of its way. When the game ends having collected too much energy will
lose you the game, and amongst the remaining players the one who collected most
will win. Very unusual game.

Very clever business game based on the
laws of supply and demand. Players
secretly order three qualities of raw materials and the demand causes the
prices to change. Players then decide
what they will make with their raw materials and then choose what to sell, and
once again supply and demand modifies the prices. The most successful player after a predetermined number of rounds
wins the game. Some rules variants included as well.

Winner of an Italian Game Design
competition in 2006. In this card game
each player takes the role of a techno-fairy who can cast magic spells to
hinder the other players and help himself.
The objective is to collect treasures which can be done either by
playing cards in front of you which permit you to collect treasures or by
casting spells which do the same. The
game uses an intriguing spell system where three cards are combined to form a
single spell - one to specify the action and two to specify the target(s) and
strength. Thus the cards can all be
used in several ways. Later in the game
it is possible to win an instant victory by discovering who your secret enemy
is and eliminating them. Otherwise most
valuable treasures wins.

that equation. A clever and subtle game of bidding for money and having the

clever way to bid for rare coins, which are needed to win the game. Limited

Fun light game of bidding and bluffing.
Players secretly play a card each into a batch. These cards can be cats of varying values (mostly +ve but a few
-ve), or dogs (which scare away either the biggest or smallest cats). Players
then bid for the batch, only knowing a little about what they will be
getting. However, there is a monetary
reward for staying in the bidding, and as players drop out more of the batch is
revealed. Neat mechanics making a great
fun light game - recommended.

Focus (aka Domination) is a strategy game
in which players attempt to make moves and capture pieces in such a way that
their opponent has no possible moves. Players may move a piece or stack of
pieces based on the number of pieces that are in the stack. Only the player
with the top piece of a stack may move that stack, and when a stack is
sufficiently large the bottom-most pieces are removed, and friendly pieces made
into 'reserves'. Won the German Spiel des Jahres in 1980.

board and has holes for 4 of the grid locations. The key can be rotated and flipped over giving 8 possible
layouts. Each player places a piece in
turn and tries to get 3 of his colour and 1 of his opponent's colour to be
visible beneath his key while trying to ensure his opponent can't do the same
with his key. Unusual.

in others cases it will be quite bad if they do.

opponents, and also use police, federal troops, and even the US Army to their
own ends. The rules are 16 pages long,
with a further 8 more of notes and tips.
The game is driven by card play and counter movement.
MacRobber, published by Queen Games. Box. In shrink. £13
Designed by Ralf Burkert. No. players:
3-5. Country: German, Duration: 1 hr, Desc. by Andy.
Each player controls the estates of a
Scottish highland clan, with warriors to defend the clan (and make raids on
neighbours when the opportunity presents itself), pipers to aid in battles, and
monks who maintain your clan's spirituality. Players start with two estates and
acquire more as the game goes on. Each
estate can be used for farming cattle, or supporting a castle or
monastery. Game play involves drawing
resource cubes from a bag and making the best use of them to improve your
clan's fortunes. Raids are resolved by
card play - the more warriors you have the larger your hand of cards. Scoring
occurs throughout the game and rewards the players with the best holdings of
each type.

fields and forest, with different coloured sheep in the fields. Players are secretly given a colour of sheep
and try to enclose fields with that colour sheep in. During the game you can disclose the colour of your sheep and the
earlier you do this the more points you get, but then other plays know how to
play against you effectively. There are
also wolves in the forests which can pick off unprotected sheep.

various ways making the river different every game. Players manage the speed,
acceleration and movement of their paddle steamers carefully, and have to pick
up passengers along the way. Ultimately it is a race though, so getting in
other players' way and placing river tiles to help you and hinder others is all
in order. Spiel Des Jahres 1997.
Mordred, published by Warfrog. 2007. Box. In shrink. £30
Designed by Martin Wallace. No. players: 3-4.
Country: British, Duration: 45 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Reprinted edition with much nicer
components than the original. Novel game of area control in which Mordred seeks
to take over Wales while King Arthur wants the players to hold him back, and
ideally defeat Mordred permanently.
Each turn you can choose whether to play safe or take risks, with more
money and more corruption points likely when you take risks. The money is used to expand your territories
and attack Mordred's holdings. Defeating Mordred's minions cancels out your
corruption points. The game can end with Mordred himself defeated, or with a
stand-off in which case the exact position determines who wins, as King Arthur
may decide some of the players have been traitorous. Recommended.

Reprint of 'Geschenkt'. Very neat card
game in which players have to repeatedly try to avoid taking cards. However, all the money spent so far to avoid
taking the current card is taken by the player who actually takes the
card. Thus eventually it will be worth
taking the card. Also, since noone has enough money to avoid taking cards for
ever, you have to make sure you manage your money well so you don't end up
being forced to take something you really don't want just because you have no
money left. Cards with adjacent numbers
also incur only one penalty. Very
simple, but fascinating and fun. Highly
recommended.

Statistical baseball game. A great
statistical game, which brilliantly lets you play a complete baseball season in
a relatively short time. A single game takes about 3 minutes once you have
mastered the formulas required. Besides the games, you have to run the Minor
League side, cope with injuries and, crucially, get the pitcher rotation right
so that your star pitches at the most important game.

Social game in which one player at a time
draws 4 object cards, and secretly ranks these in preference order. The other players (or teams) try to work out
what order that player will pick, and place counters face down accordingly,
with the option of 'doubling' a bet if they want. Correctly guessing the position of an object scores you
points. The team with the most points
wins when the game ends. A gentle but
enjoyable social game which goes down well with non-gamers.

power and money. The players buy and
sell UK businesses (real companies are represented), invest in insurance, buy

problems though, and taxes have to be paid. As politicians the players try to
get elected to government and ultimately become Prime Minister, who can affect

Tower capturing and moving game. There are 80 wooden tiles each showing a
symbol in one of 4 different colours (one colour per player). These are set out randomly on the board and
players take it in turns to move one of their tiles. There are a number of restrictions, but players will capture
opposing pieces making towers and try to get their pieces onto special symbol
spaces. Certain moves reward the player
with an extra move, and so it is possible for a player to win seemingly out of
nowhere with a carefully planned sequence of moves, so players need to watch
what other players are up to quite carefully.

A classic game, based on the middle
eastern game of Okey. Tiles effectively represent the cards from 2 decks of
playing cards + 2 jokers. Players try
to be the first to get rid of all their tiles.
Tiles are placed on the table by forming runs or sets, but as well as
just playing new sets to the table players can also add to those on the table
already and even change them all around when adding tiles, as long as
everything remains in a run or set at the end of the turn. Turns are strictly limited to 2 minutes
maximum. One of the better rummy variations in my opinion.

Card game, based on Rummy (and, maybe, the
Australian game 500 although I have never played that game). The sets and
sequences that you 'lay' are placed on a special board which is marked in such

sequences of your opponents if they overlap from their territory into yours.

Game which parodies the classic children's

has betrayed his candy citizens by bagging them up and shipping them to
children all over the world! The players play astute gingerbread men who have
discovered this and are running for their lives to escape this fate. Each
player gets a status sheet where damage to their limbs is marked off as the
game progresses. Players travel along a
track and get to play cards which can damage the other players or help
themselves.
Schotten Totten, published by Pro Ludo. 2004. Box. In
shrink. £7.50
Designed by Reiner Knizia. No. players: 2.
Country: German, Duration: 30 mins, Desc. by Andy.
An excellent card game for two from Reiner
Knizia. Part of an informal series of
two player card games which includes the very popular Lost Cities. In this game the players are fighting over
nine border stones between their Scottish clans' territories. This is done by playing cards next to the stones
with the object of making powerful combinations, eg. three of a kind, a flush,
run etc. What makes the game work so well is that both players have to commit
to playing cards before they know just what combinations they will be able to
make by the end of the game.
Considerable skill required, though the luck of the cards is important
too. Highly recommended.

Naval combat game in which the players
each have 4 ships, one of which is their flagship. Players try to surround their opponent's flagship with 3 of their
ships in order to win victory. Movement
is by rolling a die to see how many spaces one of your ships can be moved -
since you have four there is normally quite a bit of choice, and the board
isn't that many spaces wide, so often high numbers are quite restrictive. In addition the ships drift with the wind,
so you have to make sure your flagship doesn't get shipwrecked as that loses
the game too.

Fabulous item, a game that recreates a day

within a number of turns, and they get to collect postcards as souvenirs, each
worth points at the end of the game. The postcards are what makes this so
special. There are 250 of them, miniaturised, and featuring comic art in the
traditional style on one side, and their point value or other information on
the reverse. Rare - especially when complete.

Light game in which the players each
control a group of sharks which try to eat as many fish as possible - some fish
being more valuable than others. Each
turn a player can use a 'scare' move to force fish to move around a bit and
then move their sharks in order to catch fish.
If a player's sharks fail to feed one turn then they get additional
movement or an extra powerful 'scare' move the following turn. I have some house rules which improve the
game - please remind me to include them.

Collectable Card Game. City building card game tied in with the
very popular computer game of the same name.
Players play cards showing city blocks with road and rail connections
onto the table to form a city. Placing
blocks earns money according to how well the card matches up with others
already on the table. The cards each
have zone types and often have specific placement restrictions, or can affect
the value of future cards placed.
Councillors can also be played and becoming mayor has advantages. Can be played from a single 'common' deck.
This batch includes approximately 630 regular cards + 35 long cards and about
50 colour copied proxies + rules. Just fits in a box 22x14x6cm.

Stunningly produced building game in which
the players have an identical selection of wooden blocks in various colours.
Players take it in turn to add a building block to the board - there are 9
building spaces, and can also cap towers to claim them for themselves. There are clever rules limiting where you
can play, and each player also has a 'skybridge' piece which can be used to connect
adjacent towers and ensure you will score for them as well. Plenty to think
about even though your options are often quite limited.
Snake Lake, published by Tenkigames. 2006. Box. In shrink. £19

Country: Italian, Duration: 45 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Light and amusing game in which each
player controls a snake which slithers through the woods eating food and trying
to avoid trees and mushrooms and other snakes.
Snakes enter the board from a side and as their head moves further in
extra tail pieces are added thus the snakes slither taking up several
spaces. Movement is plotted two turns
in advance, with cards being placed face down on an action board and when one
is actioned a new one must be played.
Should a snake hit an obstacle it must start again from the side of the
board. Nicely produced.

either to have the strongest position when the island is fully built or to
successfully build all of two of the three types of building in your colour

Tennis Masters, published by Gold Sieber. 2000. Box. Good. £13.
Desc. by Andy.
Designed by Rolf Rotgers and Oliver
Bolten. No. players: 2. Country: German, Duration: 40 mins.
Very unusual action game. The large board shows a tennis court with a
translucent top surface. Under this surface each player has a paddle which
shows where his player can reach this turn.
The playing pieces are plastic tennis player figures with a racquet you
pull back and release in order to flick the ball. The ball is a soft fluffy thing, which will stop when it hits the
slightly rough board. If your shot
fails to land in the opponent's court you lose the point. If it gets there but out of the area shown
by your opponent's movement paddle then you played a winner. Otherwise your opponent moves their figure
and paddle and tries to return the ball.
It is possible to build up quite a bit of skill with practice.
The Awful Green Things From Outer Space, published by Steve Jackson. ca.1990.

rules for added variety and mayhem.
Thin bookcase size box edition. Humourous,
and enjoyable take on films like Alien. The spaceship Znutar becomes infested
with Awful Green Things, which grow and reproduce and unless stopped will take
over the ship. The crew of the Znutar
has to discover what effect various weapons have on the Awful Green Things, and
once they find effective weapons they need to use them as effectively as
possible. Tom Wham's graphics add a
great deal of fun to the game. Nice item.

1932. Book. Shows wear. £4

some wear. The train works, but is a
little delicate. There are signs of use throughout.
Hardback, 23x18cm, ~40 pages. Unusual book which has a very thick front
cover with a rotating disc showing a train set into it - the train can be moved

print large with numerous illustrations, some full page, and some large. The book is written as a series of
children's stories which describe various activities, some of which children
could then do at home. Unusual item.

end, not necessarily the most successful on the pitch. Terry Venables, Gary
Lineker and Paul Gascoigne are pictured on the lid.

a limit to the number of stacks each player may claim. The cards claimed are evaluated and the most
valuable batch wins the hand. Fast, fun
and nerve wracking.

Touch And Feel, published by Lagoon. 1993. Box. Good but box shows
some wear. £2.50
Designer Unknown. No. players: 2+.
Country: British, Duration: 15 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Rather like Twister except that rather
than playing on a large mat, coloured stickers are stuck to various parts of
each player's body. The very large wooden dice is rolled and the current player
must now make a part of their body touch someone else's sticker of that colour.
Touche, published by Jumbo. 1996. Box. Good. £7
Designed by Wayne Bobette. No. players:
2-6. Country: Dutch, Desc. by Andy.
Players have a hand of regular playing
cards. The board shows card images and
some special spaces distributed in a large cross shape. Players take it in turn
to play a card and place a marker on one of the corresponding spaces on the
game board. The object is to claim spaces which form certain patterns (boxes,
lines, crosses, T's). When one of these patterns is formed, the pieces are
marked to show the pattern is complete.
Players can either play individually or as partners.
Tover Je Toverweg, published by Opstelten Speelgoed. 2004.
Box. Excellent. £13.50
Designer Unknown. No. players: 2-4.
Country: Dutch, Desc. by Andy.
Each year the wizards apprentices compete
in a forest race to be the first to get to a magical destination. The apprentices themselves are not permitted
to use magic, but the wizard backing each certainly can. The game is a tactical card game and there
are several boards and different sets of rules, with one set for children age
3-4, one set for 5-7+ and one for ages 6-9+.
Trampelpfad, published by Hexagames. 1989. Box. In shrink. £15
Designed by Joe Nikisch. No. players: 2-6.
Country: German, Duration: 30 mins, Desc. by Eamon.
Very nicely made race game, with 6
fabulous wooden elephants and other wooden components. The elephants must load
tree trunks and get them home, but the more they try to carry, the slower they
may move. Do you make short, lightweight trips, or risk a heavy burden with
less trips? A very nice item. Game play is driven by dice, but with lots of
choice in how to use your movement points, with chances to hinder opponents
too.
Trap Door, published by Milton Bradley. 1983. Box. Good but 1
box corner split. £4
Designer Unknown. No. players: 2-4.
Country: Ireland, Duration: 20 mins, Desc. by Andy.
The object of the game is to be the first
to get three marbles to the center of the board. On your turn you roll a die and move one of your marbles that
many spaces along a track. If you land on an opposing marble you press your
marble down onto your opponent's. Some spaces are trapped and others aren't. If
your opponent's marble falls into a trap it falls through and this marble must
start over again. The board is large
and thick, containing the mechanism to set the traps. It can be rotated and the
trapped positions switched over between games.
Treasures And Trapdoors, published by Waddingtons. 1990. Box.
Good. £6
Designer Unknown. No. players: 2-4.
Country: British, Desc. by Eamon.
Special notes: The (very small) red ankh
treasure is damaged - only the 'stem' remains.
Does not affect play.
Very attractive-looking fantasy game, set
in the pyramid that guards the Golden Cobra. Three-dimensional setup as the
board is held above a pit full of snakes into which unfortunate pieces may fall
should they encounter an open trapdoor. A nice movement system, doing away with
dice or cards, and using a special turntable built into the pyramid.

Greyhawk, Spelljammer, and Forgotten Realms), as well as other games such as
Amazing Engine, Buck Rogers, and Gamma World.
Uptown, published by Funagain Games. 2007. Box. In shrink.
£15
Designed by Kory Heath. No. players: 2-5.
Country: American, Duration: 30 mins, Desc. by Andy.
Very clever game which is best for 2-3 players
in my opinion. The board shows a 9x9
grid which is labelled by row and column and 3x3 grid (so like an empty sudoku
grid), and the players each have a set of tiles one for each column, row and
3x3 grid and one wild tile. Each set is shuffled face down and players draw 5
tiles at a time, and take it in turn to place a tile on a corresponding
space. The objective is to keep your
tiles in as few groups as possible.
There are plenty of options and a clever rule to allow taking over other
players' space in certain circumstances. Simple rules, but many tricky
decisions and very satisfying. Highly recommended.

TV related, based on a junior version of
the Krypton Factor. The players go through several rounds trying to score as well
as possible. The rounds are: Mental
Agility (spotting the next number in a number sequence), Response (making a
shape on a card using a tangram set), Observation (players study a picture for
20 seconds and then have to answer questions about it), General Knowledge
(answer questions from cards), Physical Ability (a fairly simple card based
race game, which allows players to block each other).
And now
for some books …
